The package info on mine has info on it's three types of fancy sounding filters. The first is a carbon prefilter for removing sediment and odors. The second is a cyst filter for "removing pathogenic cysts such as Giardia". The third is a "ViruStat" microbial filter for bacteria and viruses. Somewhere in all of that is a iodine impregnated resin "cell" that also releases small amounts of iodine. I've read that the iodine taste is slight, and not nearly as bad as just puting iodine tablets into water.

I got mine more for when I'm out and about all day, either in the wilds, or at places that may not have it bottled. I'm just not a fan of bottled water and all the waste it creates. I find it insane that bottled water can cost as much as (and often more than) a bottle of tea, soda, etc.

jikwan, you remind me of grizzlyofalaska. Have you ever been Timothy Leary by any chance?
Ha! Good one. I loved the book, but have not seen the movie yet.

(obviously I'm not immune to a good troll post festival)

Or, as my pseudo-aristocratic mom would say,

So what do we know so far about the OP?

1. He intendeds (or intended) to carry his entire life savings in his underwear.
2. He wishes to contract malaria in order to try out his secret but sure remedy.
3. He intends to drink piss to avoid the immunological problems associated with bottled water.

1 and 3 together can be a conflict of interest.

Moreover,

4) Said person claims to have spent god knows how long in Asia (in say the nineties mind, it's hardly the stone age) under incredibly primitive circumstances and at no costs at all, but apparently his monastic life (doesn't one at least need to take a train or bus to and from such a monastery and hence witness something of the country?) was so secluded that the existence of money belts, traveler's cheques and Bisleri bottles has completely bypassed him.

Right. Next poster please.

Well, I guess taking the piss could certainly cure a lot of ills (laughter is the best medicine, and all that ...), but I don't think it's very secret.

Still not sure about the whole money down the underpants thing. That Norwegian Blue ferret might object.
