I've observed that intramuscular injections hurt less when they are given into the upper part of the buttock muscle (muscle not fat!) than into the deltoid muscle on the shoulder. For the past few years, I've been getting my flu vaccines in the buttock for this reason. I don't know whether anyone has studied whether it makes a difference, in terms of efficacy of the vaccine, to get the injection in the butt or the shoulder; but I suspect somebody did study it (probably 100 years ago) and found no significant difference. The shoulder is probably the favorite site just because it's easier/more convenient to reach than the buttock. So you might consider asking the doc (or nurse) if you can get your shots in your butt.

If anyone has any advice that would be great
The risk of a sore arm for a few hours FAR outweighs those socially-constructed western medicine diseases like hepA. Throw the dice!!! DO IT!!! Let us know how you're doing in 6 months.

Is there any thought about the difference between the Hep A and Hep B shots and the Twinvac, that combines the two? I have my appointment with the county health on Thursday.
Thanks

Shots

Hi folks,

I just got my needles last night. My arm is a bit sore now but the actual injections themselves were relatively painless. Some good news though. (I'm sure many of you may already know this but) Polio is no longer given in a needle. It is just two drops on a spoon that you lick off and swallow! One less needle Sweet!

Injections or Not??

I am getting the following injections: Typhoid, Meales/Mumps and Tetanus?

Is that enough?

I am traveling in 2 1/2 weeks.

I am also planning on taking Malaria tablets.

CDC says (www.cdc.gov/travel/indianrg.htm) Hep A, Hep B, Japanese encephalitis, Typhoid, and boosters for tetanus-diphtheria and measles. Oh, don't forget malaria pills.

I get to start my Hep shots tomorrow, och

I also understand Typhoid is a pill form Yes!!! my arm/bum is saved.

Anyone taken typhoid pills????

Tetanus is every 10 years or 5 years if you work outdoors

I don't know why
a) People are asking for medical advice on this forum.
b) People are giving medical advice on this forum.

Would you rely on the internet for financial advice? You wouldn't, so I don't know why you'd rely on the internet for medical information. Unless there's a wave of unethical backpacking MDs that I don't know about, talk to a doctor! You know, those guys in RL that wear lab coats?

The first time I went to India, the Dr. gave me Chloroquine at Toronto General, when I got to India they said Nobody uses Chloroquine anymore, so I flushed the pills and ordered a G&T! It's interesting to get a general world consensus on shots etc., feed it in your database and then use it to help decide. I mean Rabies shots ... if you still do the 100-yard dash in under 20 seconds ... who needs them!

What is G&T pills for malaria?? Can I get them in India??

My two cents: This is a great site to learn about what other people's experiences, and what they have learned. Yes, you always need to make your own mind up. I think the more the infomation the better.

There are many G&T pills in India all easy to swallow and with similar results.
Personally I would go with the London Gin & Schwepes Tonic Water.

PeakXV,
Do you need to get a prescription for the meds?
Gin sounds great but vodka sounds better

On my second trip to India the Dr. at the foreign travel & tropical disease center asked where I was staying and I told him mostly the larger cities and 5 star hotels. He tore up the Malaria prescription and told me to tuck my trousers in my socks when I go out and have a beer or two in the evening and you'll be fine! Gotta love those Dr's
