The most unhealthful environment you encounter regularly is a commercial airliner.

get the facts

You can also visit web sites such as this one: http://www.searo.who.int/en/Section10/Section2246.htm
for more info on infectious diseases in Asia. Knowledge is power.

I'm glad to get some confirmation on the NRI doc thing --- thought I might get jumped on there . I guess one could tell by the general nature of the conversation: If they give you coffee and insist on all your itinerary details while getting their own photos out, you'd know they weren't negative about the place!

I used to have lovely chats about Indian music and India with my NRI doc in London: but she did say she had a love/hate relationship with it: she loved to visit but would hate to live here again.

interesting information-thank you!!

i want to thank all who have responded to my post. i was looking for insight from people who know, have been to, and are in india.

i have closely researched every site for 2 months, WHO, CDC, mdtravelhealth, etc. i have spoken to many travel clinics and hospitals regarding vaccinations, malaria meds, antibiotics, etc. and none of them suggested that i stay home and not go to india. i called around alot because some of the shots in chicago are so unbelievably expensive, ($600 for rabies, $600 for jap e).

i decided to speak to Indian doctors because I thought they might do the shots for less money. The 3 doctors were all in different offices near Devon. I was extremely surprised and caught off guard when I heard the same advice and warning from all of them. I was not expecting it! They were all very sweet and did not show a dislike for India, rather they wanted me to go, just at a safer time.

I had made my plans to be in India for 6 months and so that is why I wrote to IMers, to get your experience of india. And because this is the information on the WHO website about chikungunya:

"there are 1.25 million cases in india.. 258,998 cases in Maharashtra province with attack rates at 45% and there is a co-occurrence of dengue (this is where i will be spending a month at the yoga ashram!). while recovery is the expected outcome, convalescence can be prolonged (up to a year or more) and persistent joint pain may require pain medication and long term anti-inflammatory therapy."

this is exactly what the indian doctors told me! now i am willing to take my chances, precautions, etc. but these are compelling facts. along with my pre-disposition to bronchitis, pneumonia and severe sensitive stomach (even in the US).

i am a solo, experienced traveler to many 3rd world countries over many years. and yes,i believe in signs from the universe- call me crazy... but my spirits tend to act up from time to time.. i will write to the yoga ashram to see about the occurrence there. i did write to the ashram in andrah pradesh and need to hear back from them.

again, thank you for all the interesting information. i was unaware of the reputation of indian doctors in the US (mine seemed very sincere and loved india). i knew i would get some good insight from IMers.

namaste!

Very common. Many Indians would love to come back, but, by the time they have saved enough money (by Western standards), they are too old and set and have kids who are settled there, don't want the day to day hassles of living in India and are fearful of returning, not realising that India has changed in many ways, some for the better.... and so, most don't.

But its a very common dream, and the love/hate relationship isn't so uncommon either.
