the bottom line is that no matter how holisitically we live (try to live) -- if we eat organic food, etc etc -- we have all types of chemicals in our bodies from the environment. I read once that almost every one of us has teflon in our bodies, even if you have never used non-stick cookware. That is just one chemical, I won't even go into growth hormones or antibiotics from food.

try traditional chinese medicine

I wonder how acupuncture is working for Jacob Ruiz...

I went to my acupuncturist and started a course of acupuncture that will support my sinus & respiratory meridians. I will continue through Jan. and Feb. before I leave in March. Of course, this was after I finished my 10 day round of daily massive doses of penicillin (however, my sinuses were still funky even after this course of meds.)

I have to say that after one treatment, this is the first time since I got back that my sinuses have been clear. He also put me on traditional chinese herbs to support my sinuses and general immunity. If you are interested, the herbal line is http://www.liferising.com/index.html

Acupuncture

Well, yogagal, I'd have to say there is not a big difference after 3 sessions. I had a noticable difference after the 1st session but none at all after the next 2. I'm using a saline spray each day but it only seems effective as long as it's in my nostrils. I think that time will bring my breathing back to it's pre-India strength. Since you are "yogagal" and know about yogic breathing my wife suggests pranayam...specifically Kapalabhati... daily. I'm a terrible back-slider so I don't remember to do it but i'll recommend it to you...I think any and everything you can do before leaving will help so I encourage you...and everyone about to depart... to begin some kind of preventive regime before going. because Indian air is tough stuff. Thanks for the website link. I'll investigate it. Give us a progress report as you go....

because I am a "yogagal", I know that kapalabhati breathing is not for everyone, and sometimes can be dangerous. In fact, I no longer teach kapalabhati breathing in a group yoga class. The effects of kapalabhati breathing are dependent on your ayurvedic dosha, and for me, I no longer do it. but if it works for you...

my sinuses are feeling much better, but as I said, this was after a 10 day course of meds, but after my first acupuncture treatment, in fact during, my sinuses cleared up just like that. and I feel great with the chinese herbs, much better than I've felt since I got back -- I'm using the herbal combo of HB and GBS.

That explains why my ionspa water was black

Returned from India on November 22. Because I was not feeling well I used my ionspa footbath. I was really surprised that after 15 minutes the water was filling with particulates and they were black. The first time I used the machine the water turned black but never again until after India. Often the water turned a rusty colored with a mucous mix (delightful). After India the first one was black, so I did another immediately after and it was black also. I assume it is all the metals and pollutants leaving the body.

www.wellspringproducts.com/about-ionSpa.htm for more information.

There are many brands of this sort of machine; this company is the least expensive as far as I know. I am leaving in the morning for a Vipassana Meditation class (learned about on Indiamike). I will return on January 7 if anyone wants more information. There is no way to say this without it sounding like a spamming salesman but if someone wants one I would be happy to get them one a lower price than retail or even what they can be bought new on Ebay.

Thanks for bringing up the pollution problem. After I read the thread, I immediately started a treatment and yep, the water has particulates and has turned black.

ewww, black water?! that's pretty intense. after my second trip to india i developed a small brown discoloration on the bottom of my foot. i waded through monsoon rains, and got sick for a few days after that, so i think it may be related to that. i need to return to india for some pancha karma!

Obviously I have not explained the Ionspa well

My feet were not stained in India. The Ionspa does the following:

Because of our poor diets, high stress, disease and frailty, (going to India inhaling pollution) we tend to accumulate and store excessive quantities of waste products. The ionSpaź creates an ion charged environment similar to a walk along the beach, only more powerful, because your feet are immersed in the ions being generated in the footbath. Neutralized particles and waste material are pulled out of your body via osmosis. Vibrant color changes in the water are just a partial indicator of the toxins that are leaving your body. The unseen, microscopic effects are much more profound. Ions: they may be tiny, but they are fierce!

The combination of electrolysis in the array, ionization of the water, and the flood of toxins purged from your body, are evident just minutes into an ionSpaź session.

Black particles indicate metals are being released. I did not turn the water black before I went to India.

It appears to me that I always catch a lower respiratory infection in India. <cough cough> I first catch a common cold that then turns into a lower respiratory infection. I never have these infections in Finland, even when it's winter. Pollution, climate change(s), etc. appear to expose me to them in India. Ended up in a hospital during my first trip. So, I may be a weakling, but still I travel to India. Yay.

One of my yogi friends gave me the name of a local naturopath who has a "detox tank" for the entire body. It is sort of like a sauna, although hotter I think (herbs are also used in the steam). The people I know who use it, swear by it. I said I would check it out after my second trip....

My sinuses lasted 3 weeks until we arrived in Delhi. Although my favourite place in all our travels, it was the most brutal in terms of pollution. After 4 days of resisting the city's smog, my white blood cells and lungs gave up. The result was all the after effects described in this thread.

However, the one benefit was that my voice sounded like Barry White's for a few weeks afterwards. Wish I still had it instead of my usual Mickey Mouse voice.
