Hence you find them sponsoring F1 car and motorcycle racing (although that's been restricted by most governments in recent years as well)
Everything is banned in India...the biggest Tobacco Company in India used to Endorse the cricket teams, under its wills brand, however now they are not allowed to do that and few years back the sponsorship was given to Sahara..

"Red & White" bravery awards are no longer active or they would have changed their name...

And to add to that showing a actor smoking on the screen is widely discouraged and a hue and cry is raised everytime a prominent actor is shown smoking on the screen,

I agree with Nick on this, I seriously doubt the concept of a glass a day.

I just quit smoking, so I think all smokers should be lined up against a wall, their clothes removed, all dignity took away, hosed down with Iced water, then beaten to death with fire extinguishers

I certainly hope not!

but in relation to smoking if that's the case then I applaud the govts commitment! If they can keep track of every poster, advert, event, sponsored dinner, charity, or celebrity endorsement then good on them!

Public Interest Litigation.

Sometimes/often, in India, a euphemism for a frivolous lawsuit. The Supreme Court recently passed a judgement saying frivolous lawsuit instigators would be fined 1 lac (not sure about the figure)

Just curious. As a non smoker I'm blind to all the tobacco stuff anyway.
at least in the US, by marketing to teenagers.

also as an ex-smoker, I'm amazed at the number of people who still smoke. I mean, everyone knows it causes lung cancer and other related cancers. and yes I know how it is physically and psychologically addicting, but addictions can be overcome.

and what is the cost of a pack of cigarrettes in India? in my area, with the taxes that are put on cigarrettes, a pack of cigs in Chicago can be over $5/pack, so that's over 200rupees a pack.

if you add up the amount of money you spend in a year on smoking, why would you still smoke?

I'm really delighted to find out how much anti-smoking the Indian government is.

Come to think of it, I have heard about films that present smoking as glamorous getting into trouble.

Unhappy

I've always got the sensation that indian are not big smokers. 120 million smokers in India means around 11% of the population and even in my country (Spain) smokers are not less than three times this percentage. With a population of more than 1,000 millions figures are always shocking.

In my opinion indians and foreigners when we are in India smoke quite a lot of polluted air specially on the cities.

i live in the most prosperous part of canada right now. the fastest growing population, and more jobs than there are people to fill them. i'm 23 and a lot of the people around me within the 18 to 30 range smoke, either socially or regularly. probably close to 50%. of course everyone is more than aware of the health concerns, we're just a bunch of young people with too much expendable income and nothing to do but try and look cool. mortality is something people only really care about when it's iminent (i.e. when their older), and by then it's probably already too late.

btw i don't really smoke. i've had a few drags...
