In plenty of time?
Well it seems I finally have a taker for my house, I'll by flying out to India at the earliest oppotunity.
Now then; vaccinations. I will of course be making an appointment with my G.P. to obtain the various necessary jabs. In the meantime I need to hand my notice in at work, apply for a visa, book a flight etc. etc. A lot to think about!! Can anyone offer an opinion as to how long before flying I need to have the jabs, to ensure they are effective? Thanks. |

No, I'd just speak to your doctor/travel clinic as soon as you can, it's just a simple visit or phone call even.
Generally it doesn't have to take that much time, but some need to kick in, others require a repeated series (which can probably be finished there if necessary). So the sooner you can ask about it the better.

Thanks Machadinha.
I'm just trying to get a rough idea at this stage, so I can start to form a general plan. I will of course refer to my G.P. Do you think 4 weeks might be fairly close to what's required? |

I really don't know, and vaccination advisories vary significantly per your country of origin. I know I finished one series in Delhi because I was late'ish. Which wasn't a problem.
My (Dutch) travel health board advises about 4 weeks ahead for a trip of under 3 months (and advises that sooner doesn't hurt); about 6 weeks for longer trips (ditto.) And with a note that even for last-minute trips there's no harm in dropping by, & that many vaccinations will take effect after a short time. It adds btw that since most vaccinations are long-lasting, there's no harm in getting your jabs in e.g. February for a July trip. And that school holidays are a busy time for them. |

Another board I go on gets vaccination questions all the time! Basically, I would go and ask now: the way my clinic works you need an appointment to dicuss what's needed and then another for the actual jabs. Stuff like typhoid, tetanus and hep A can all be given at the same time, and you only need one (at least that's what I got) Those do need boosting occasionally, so if you had hep A for another trip more than a year ago, don't rely on it still being effective.
Malaria you get tablets for, and from what I've heard of costs I reckon I'm gonna try and get these on the road. Rabies and Japanese encyphalitis (sp?) are the other two that crop up, and for these you need longer. I think if you want the rabies jabs you need to have them pretty spaced out. I know a couple of people who have had nasty reactions to Japanese Encyphalitis, so if you think you might need that go soon and give yourself time to recover before your trip!!! I think that one also comes in several stages. I'm reckoning to go three months before to get my vaccinations for 2 weeks in Syria (and I shouldn't need any but the basics). It just doesn't hurt to be prepared. Enjoy! ![]()

It all depends upon the Jabs.
Some you need to have a course of say 3 over a month. Some jabs are effective straight away, others take a week or so. Please discuss with your Doctor or Travel Clinic.

Ricco, have the jabs 6 weeks before you travel.

Thanks for all the advice.
I've seen the travel specialist at my local G.P. surgery. I'm going to feel like a pin cushion over the next 4 weeks! They tell me I need Japanese Encyphilitis jabs for south east Asia, where I'll head for after my 6 months in India. I can only get this done privately, at some cost! Could I get these in India do you think, closer to the time? |

Yes you could but ...
The Japanese Encyphilitis Jab can have some nasty side effects, after the jabs (you need 3) you will have to stay at the clinic for at least 30 minutes and they should advise you not to travel too far from a clinic/hospital for 7/14 days at least. ... If you decide to have it, I would get it done in the UK. |

typhoid booster
thought i'd jump on the band wagon of this thread...
after visiting southern India in december, I assumed all my vaccinations would be up-to-date. (never assume anything when travelling) after checking my records it looks as though i needed a typhoid booster in May 2007... anyone know if i can get this in India? i leave in 5 days... |

Don't take my word for it, but it's not like it's a highly exotic shot, so yes, I'd assume why not.
But why not check with the appropriate embassies whether at home or abroad or something (tropical health clinic..., all the usual suspects). They should know. If you have 5 days and you can do it now, then why not do that. |
