I am going to spend extended period of time in India in the next few years and i wondered what the rules are regarding having Dietary supplements such as Vitamins, Minerals, that are for personal use imported via Mail. i also use a lot of brazilian Guarana for Energy and would also want to ship that. Dopes anybody know what would be the best way to do this?

I've brought dietary supplements into the country in my luggage. Not really an issue as long as it's in the original container and looks like what it is. In fact, I've heard of quite a few raw food/vegan types flying into India and traveling all over with plastic containers of probiotics. However, they change the lists of prohibited items all the time. I'd say bring the stuff, and if they confiscate it at the airport, c'est la vie.

Still, the Indian customs authorities are more interested in returning Indian workers bringing appliances from the Persian Gulf than they are in the odd foreigner with a little plastic bag of herbs. Just as long as they're not illegal. India has very harsh anti-narcotics laws.

Thanks for the reply. i am not concerned about bringing things in my luggage, but about shipping them by Post or Courier such as Fed/Ex. What are the procedures here and what is allowed.

You mean shipping to India, or shipping from India? I don't think they'll care much what you ship to yourself. Within India, I recently noticed, you can ship just about anything - there's an interesting (and somewhat nauseating) list of body fluids that can be shipped, too, and the postal procedures for each.

I think the problems, if any, will be at the U.S. end. However, if it's not a controlled substance, and if it won't leak and wreck other stuff, I don't think they care. They certainly won't care in India.

Hi Peter,

In Aus I used to order a lot of stuff from bodybuilding.com, sometimes the shipments would get through, other times they were sent back, even tho most of the time they were the same supplements etc. I contacted them in the States when I moved here to see if they had any issues sending any supplements etc to India, they just told me to contact the customs here, seem to be alot more flexible than Aus as to what they permit in. I am going to order some stuff in a little while tho, and see what happens. I have found a few brands over here like GNC etc, the other day I found some glutamine in Star Bazaar?? I think the stock can be really hit and miss, buying from the US is just so much more economical and the product range there is gi-normous. In the past, at least with bodybuilding.com if your shipment is returned they will give you a refund.
