| Immunization Recommendations My family just visited a Traveler's Heath Clinic. Here is what the Dr recommended for us. We will be in India for 3 weeks. Immunizations Hep A shots - (2 shots, the 2nd shot 6 months after the first) Typhoid - (oral, last 5 years as opposed to 2 years for a shot). 70% effective. Hep B - (can be combined with Hep A for shots, 2 shots, the 2nd shot 6 months after the first) Influenza - will get in fall when available Tetanus/diptheria Measles Polio Varicella (chickenpox) My kids (9&8) had to get only the Hep A shots and Typhoid (4 pills over 8 days). My wife and I have had the measles and ckickenpox along with a Tenanus/diptheria shot. So we elected to have the combination Hep A/B shot, along with Typhoid and Polio. Malaria We elected to go with Malarone pills (atovaquone/proguanil). Start 1 day before and continuing taking 7 days after getting back. Deli Belly The doc presribed my wife and I a 3 day supply of Cipro and my kids Zithromax. Jet Lag The doc prescribed Ambien for my wife for sleep. Other info Besides the standard mosquito warnings, the doc warned us about Leishmaniasis, an infection that is aquired by the bite of an infected sandfly. Take it for what ever it is worth! |

| Polio? You didn't get Dr. Salk's vaccine as a kid, when polio was eradicated in the US? |

| I believe a polio booster is recommended for travellers to the tropics after 15 years or longer since your last vaccination.

| I just had a doctor's visit too. Most of the same stuff--shot me up with Hep A/B, Meningitis, Typhoid and Diptheria/Tetanus, plus prescriptions for Mefloquine and Cipro. I hate getting shots. |

| yup, got my shots two weeks ago and I got a polio booster. Check the CDC website.... but why measles and chickenpox? you never had those diseases? that tetanus shot was a doozy -- deltoid muscle hurt for 3 days....

| ammadas, the total for four shots for me was $405. Of course, it may be different for you, so ask your doctor. |

| Rabies vaccine I just went to get the rabies vaccine yesterday in Montreal and was told that it costs 750 Canadian for the series of rabies vaccinations! Is it cheaper elsewhere in Canada? What a rip off--I think I'll just carry a big stick and fight off the dogs and monkeys with that ;-) Is anybody else worried about rabies out there? |

It wasn't required when I was a kid since polio was very rare then, after the generation before us got all the vaccines. (In the US. I don't know if they require it now for kids or not. I don't think so. They do Hep B, though, to get into school.). | |

| Then you should definitely consider getting immunization for polio before going to India. And Hep B, too -- I got it there years ago. Quote:
