I see prevention of, but what about cures???
Hi,
just returned from a short trip, Varanasi & Dharamsala....and brought back some kinda stomach thing. I'm sure lots of you have experience with this, please help! Started a couple days before I came back and now I've been back for 4 days.....it's not as bad as I started but I'm far from back to normal...how long do these things usually last? Is there something I should be eating/should not be eating? is there anyway to tell whether it's viral or bacterial???? Any tell-tale signs to look out for? watch out for? does this post require TMI??! Maybe these are questions for my Dr, but I was going to wait till monday to see if it cleared up, and if not, I would call then. Meanwhile, I thought I'd ask here to see what kind of response I'd get, you all seem to have so much experience with all things INDIA! any help/info greatly appreciated! |

Sorry to hear about your tummy elsie - go see your travel clinic Dr. ASAP - he/she can isolate the bug quickest. Probably nothing serious - it's always a good sign to know that you feel up to typing at the computer.

See my thread on hives, Elsie. Yes, go to a doctor. Say that you've been in India. They can test you for bacteria and parasites. The bacteria test takes three days. Parasites might require multiple tests. You can also, of course, be treated without being tested, but my doctor was hesitant to do this because it means swallowing a lot of antibiotics, possibly ones you don't need. I was tested, and after many things had been ruled out, I was treated for a specific parasite even though the lab hadn't returned a definite diagnosis. Chances are it isn't a virus if it is dragging on for so long. I hope you have insurance and don't have to foot the bill yourself.

Say several times that you have been in India. Repeat it, and make sure they take it seriously.

So true! It changes the mindset of the medical personnel. They immediately take you very, very seriously.

I'm currently undergoing some 'Delhi Belly' type issues. Though I'm not in India but in my own home, Portland Oregon. Wife thinks it may have been some chicken that sat out a little long. I think it's the same bug that's been going around our office.
Tonight my wife's mother just prescribed a classic traditional Indian remedy for malfunctioning bottoms. Yogurt with whole mustard seeds, eaten without chewing the seeds. Three hours later I'm not getting much relief (you can probably guess where I'm typing into my laptop.) We'll see how this goes...
