I'm going to be in the Kurnool area October 29th. Last time I was in India I didn't take the medication cause it made me sick but it was very dry there. I wasn't planning on it this time...but with all the flooding it might be a good idea. What do you guys think?

I think you should go ask a qualified person and then decide what to do. If you didn't tolerate the medication, that can be changed so this should not be an obstacle.

Be sure to take a water purification system when going there, you'll need it.

This is hard to answer. There are millions of Indians that do not routinely take malaria medication, and do not getmalaria. There are millions, I suppose that also do get it.

I travel about once a month to India and have never taken malaria medication. Fortunately, I have also not gotten malaria.
Its possible but not probable (in my non-medical opinion) that you will get malaria

However if you do, its not the dreaded illness in India, that it is in the States, because it is easily diagnosed and treated here, since physicians are familiar with it. In the states it goes undiagnosed for quite a while.

I think there is a far greater risk of water borne illnesses than malaria

Not water borne but mosquito borne. Pretty tough stuff compared to dysentary. There are different types of malarial preventives so its important to know what you took last time. Its also extremely important to know how a particular regime should be taken and to follow that religiously. Do not take any of the malarials lightly, its not aspiren and should be taken by an informed consumer..

This is the link about D. Amarvai village. It is a very small remote village close to Gadwal area.

I do not think that this village as such had flooding but the surrounding areas close to the river have been badly damaged.

I suggest that you keep a tab on how the situation is in Kurnool by the end of october and then take a call if you want to go there or not.

Hyderabad will be fun. It is my hometown and I lived there all my life. You will love it.

Also, if possible do visit Gadwal and Wanaparthy as they were erstwhile princely states and have nice old palaces and also some nice temples.

If you need any help let me know.

BTW, I used to live in Washington DC for two years and I have been to Charlotte a few times and loved it. People down south were really friendly and laid back.

Have a good day,
Harsha

You should start the course before you come so that you see which ones you tolerate. Malaria is easily mistaken for food poisoning as symptons may include vomiting and/or diarreah as well as fever.

As a budding medical student, my opinion on it is that prevention is better than cure. Although no medicinal absolute vaccine exists, Malaria tablets can help your body resist certain strengths of the illness. However, the growing potential for parasite resistance to these medicines is undermining malaria control efforts. There are no effective alternatives to artemisinins for the treatment of malaria either on the market or nearing the end of the drug development process.

HIV/Aids is also rife in India, but you wouldn't play Russian Roulette, so why do it with any other illness?

Hope I don't sound patronising, just quite passionate on the prevention of illnesses!
