Word has it it doesn't hurt to mention you've been to the tropics (and make sure the implication is understood) if you come down with a weird flu some years after the fact.

one couple i met here in australia, had been in thailand for 2 years and had taken malaria tablets for all that time and were told not to try and have a baby for 2 years after stopping the malaria pills!
so, get all the info if you are going to take any precautions against malaria. the medications might be improved by now, hopefully.

Obvious to you, no doubt.

Obvious to me too.

Obvious to the crowd who go to India with a bag full of antibiotics and start taking them at the drop of a hat --- probably not .

If you haven't met them yet (bet you have!) hang around this orum or a while: you will!

Very, very important.

People do die because of the standard "it's probably flu, come back if you're not better in a week" response of many GPs to general feverish symptoms.

Malaria

According to the doctor....The malaria parasite lies dormant in the liver for a period, so you may only actually get sick once you get home. You should take Doxycycline each morning with breakfast. Start a couple of days before your trip and continue for a week after you return. I know a pain but better than getting Malaria from a mosquito bite, esp in Kerala.

It's not necessarily obvious that one should see a doctor when really sick: some people not only don't go to doctors, they advocate all-purpose quack remedies like colloidal silver in place of real medicine...

Sounds boring I know, but that's all I want after a few years of mad rush at work.

Unfortunately yesterday I found out that it's quite easy to get malaria over there

I don't want to take any tablets, because I have a bad liver. Besides I wouldn't be able to be taking them for half a year.
So I only see one option - to go somewhere else...

There's so much information on the internet, that I'm feeling lost now Where to go, where to stay? Kerela sounds good, but where about in Kerala? Is it safe in there? Would I need to take any pills while staying there?

Sorry for all those questions, I'm feeling stupid now
from the snippets of info that i have been able to find, goa appears to be a high risk area for malaria, kerala, low. there were no malaria cases in 2000 but then had 51 a year or so later.
at the time of year you are going to be there it is getting hotter and is about the time to head north to the himalayas, but i have found off season times to be less touristy and one can have more interaction with the locals.
