I have chikungunya (in HYD)
So for the last 48 hours I've have severe Chikungunya symptoms (My MIL has it too)
High high fever, severe joint pain just about everywhere. The worst thing is, I have to fly back to the US on Friday, with a 22 month old on lap! I am really hoping I recover before then, but it just seems to be getting worse. Theoretically I could change my travel dates (no restrictions) but I already did it once this trip and my husband has to be back to work in the states. I cannot imagine traveling alone with my little guy. Has anyone had chikungunya or know someone who has? How long did the symptoms last? |

There is some information here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chikungunya) but not about flying or not. The best thing would be to talk to a doctor about whether you will be healthy enough to fly or not.

Much sympathy.
From what I have heard and read of the disease, it can cause pain for weeks and is best taken a lot of care of. I think you should rest. I think that long plain trip could be really bad for you. Never mind what I think: see a doctor! |

They may not let you fly. When my boy fell ill I had to rearrange flights for my wife & him and go back alone

Sorry, but go see a doctor. As that Wikipedia link above attests, there is no known treatment for Chikungunya as far as I know, so it doesn't even feature into the question.

I agree with Baba's view. By friday the pains will come down drastically & can fly. Don't worry & cool.
Drink plenty of water in addition as suggested by Baba. Wish you speed recovery! Jay |

A friend in Hyderabad is recovering from Chikungunya - his doctor gave him treatment for the inflammation and pain and he had symptoms for several weeks but then it suddenly cleared up with no ongoing problems. A doctor should be able to help with pain killers and anti-inflammatories to help with the flight, then you will recover fully with time. But see a good doc - as it may be another type of virus. The local doctors will have more experience of Chikungunya than anywhere else. And try not to get too stressed, you'll recover fully in time.

) --- I have heard that it is a disease that can take weeks and months, not days, to pass. That doesn't necessarily mean it will, but it can.Whilst the disease, like flu or a cold, must be allowed to run its course, as FotM says, a doc can give symptomatic-relief medicines. Do see a doc for this, not just a trip to the pharmavy, as I think I heard some pain killers can be dangerous in Chikungunya. I've also heard (here) that one of the antimalarials (chloroquine, I think) can be used. In fact I had an argument with an another member about this, and had to eat my words. However, this stuff can really, really upset the stomach in higher than prophylaxis doses. Last time I took it it was head over the toilet bowl every 30 minutes. Not fun. |
