T Shirts, trousers, skirts are fine. As for how short, it actually depends on what occasion you are wearing it for. If you are mostly going to mingle with office folks or hopping into restaurants or parties, short skirts should be ok i guess. But not if you want to do some general street shopping and move around in crowded areas to experience the feel of the city.

The city is not as conservative as you may think, as far as dressing is concerned. I have often been surprised by what i see on the streets.

That's what I thought too. After reading here and other sites, it looks like India is another, isolated, planet... With that, I mean it would have been weird if India wasn't influated buy other countries, although it's still a conservative coutry. Ehhh, my English isn't that good... :-D Did you understand what I meant? I have also understood that Hyderabad is a very "international" city and maybe more used to "western clothes" than other, amller cities??? This is all guessing from me, maybe I am totally wrong...

Hi Norway,

you are not totally wrong, but not totally right either...

Again, you can have totally different dress sense and dress codes depending on which group you move around with.

I guess you should be ok as long as you are wearing something that is generally accepted as decent. Avoid very tightfitting clothes & those showing a lot of skin - you should be fine.

sorry i wasn't very clear about the hotels.

as bigzero said, all the hotels are close to the city centre... in fact, you can walk from some of those to some resteraunts, pubs and some shopping malls. if money is not a problem, i would suggest the kakatiya sheraton. its a better hotel, and slightly more central than the others.

I would recommend a hotel away from the busy city center and more in the airport-Banjara Hills area. Its closer to Hitec and more posh..

So, what is the difference between VERY tight and tight? I have a very typical western concervative buisiness style (very decent) but wonder if it is too tight... Maybe it's decent for me, but not for you?

You believe I want a "posh" hotel???

Remember, I don't care if my husband has to take a cab/taxi for the conference, it's more important that I don't need to...

1. The city center is right now a mess with road- flyovers being constructed. I doubt it will be ready by Jan. So unless you like dry and dusty weather witha a lot of vehicle exhaust in the air -- dont plan too much abt walking near by the City center.

2. It is difficult for people to define what is very tight and all. You can have a dupatta handy, (a light cloth which covers the shirt). If you think your dressing is attracting too many stares for your comfort, just cover yourself with it. Lot of indian women too do this, and take it of when they are in more comfortable surroundings. Malls, discos, pubs in the city - what you dress is not much of a issue. You might get a few stares the worst, but make sure you carry one especially if you travel the more conservative/crowed parts of the city like Charminar/Koti etc.

3. Most start hotels are near the city center. Taj Krishna, Taj Banjara, ITC Kakatiya Shereton to name a few. Your conference organizers should be able to confirm the hotel well in advance.

4. Taxi is very affordable in the city. But it helps if you have the hotel arrange the taxi. Safety may not be a question, but you have drivers trying to charge you extra by taking long routes.

6. AP tourism has a variety of single day tours. Including ones which finish by evening. You can consider them if you want to join your spouse by the evening.

7. Dont buy too much in Charminar kind of areas. Unless you are accompanied by someone who knows the places well, they will try to make a big profit out of you.

You will have a good time in Hyderabad, my suggestion is to stay at one of the fine Taj/Sheraton hotels in the Banjara Hills area. Hi-Tech city is not too far from there for your husband. I know a local travel agent very well, if you PM me I can send her e-mail address (my parents live in Hyderabad by the way)to you - she can arrange a car+driver. Re: dress, as many have suggested, Hyderabad is getting westernizede rapidly, although there are many areas especially in the old city (Charminar area) that is conservative. As some have said, try to avoid showing too much skin - you know what you are comfortable with.

Hyderabad is also known for pearls - but, you need a reliable peerson with you since you can be cheated. I shall try to remembr the name of the jewellery store that is very reputable, ah, I recall .. one of them is called Chaganlal.

Cheers

Hi Sarat and nattusbs and thank you for the information.

I have now booked my tickets to Hyderabad. I am REALLY excited and have realised I have a lot to do before the trip. (Vaccinations and visas etc.. etc...)

About pearls. I love pearls and if you have stores you can recommened, please tell me!

Please tell me everything!

We decided to stay at Green Park as our friends also will stay there. I know it's not as good as Taj or Sheraton, but I have heared it's decent and clean.
