Get a bucket big enough to sit in. Fill the bucket with water, then sit in it.

This is actually really helpful! I have seen a jug or bucket (without spray available) and reflected on the technique required. I couldn't agree more about sprays - a most fantastic bit of plumbing that I would love to have in UK/Oz loos.

when I was in chennai in january two of my yoga students stayed at the same hotel I did (only for 3 days until they got disgusted and left for a 5 star hotel.)

when the woman (who I already knew was the high maintenance type) saw the bathroom for the first time -- no bathtub, no shower stall, just the sink, toilet, and shower head in the middle of the room -- she gasped and asked me there the bathtub was. I pointed to the bucket and said "you're looking at it...."
