rooh afza is such an envigorating drink - i wonder why they do not have aggressive marketing for it. there are so many lovely young women and men still not into the cold drinks business. they could be roped in to dance to jingles of 'rooh afza, i love you'.

the way they make it in many cheap small restaurants in India, is not always very traditional!! (I mean the water lassi)

But they haven't got the composition right, atleast this product been around nearly over 10 years now, when i tasted it first time long ago it reeked with too much kewda in it, never had it again.

jyotirmoy, you always seem to be right. yes, they could create an oasis in the desert and then, where there is a body of water, there can certainly be the body of a female - in bikinis.

How safe is Lassi to drink from vendors?

Should this be avoided? What about in Restaurants? Should it be ordered without ice??

I really enjoy Lassi, would hate to go to India and do without.

Thoughts???

Never really got the hang of Lassis - I find them a little bland compared to all the fresh fruit smoothie concoctions these days.

However, If I had to have a street vendor lassi, I would make sure it was sans ice and that my stomach had been broken-in to the Indian environment for a few days before. Better yet if you get one in the most sanitary conditions possible.

On balance i would say drink your fill ,"a lassi a day keeps the doctor away " but without ice !!! have personal experience of this .One day feeling a bit knackered (tired) went into a restaurant ,lassie please ,no ice !It came back from the kitchen with ice .I am very sorry Say's waiter ,i will change it but it doesnt really matter because we use purified water .ok says i ,leave it .One week later bad stomach bug and that lassi was prime culprit ,beware .

(stomach bugs usually 'mature' in 12 to 24 hours, so I reckon that lassi was OK...)

I love lassi, but more often than not I make my own, and I know that the ice has come from drinking water. Sweet lassi, mango lassi, tonight was bannana lassi.

You have to make a judgement on the cleanliness of the restaurant, just like consuming anything else...

If you are really that worried about how your lassi is made maybe you shouldn't be going to India at all! There's plenty of other things in India that are likely to cause you more harm, crossing the street, for example
