I always asked for "sweet lassi no ice". sometimes the waiter would give me a weird look, but I never got sick. if you shake your head, point to your stomach, and make a "sick" face, they will know why you don't want ice or water. no explanation needed.

lassis

It is a roll of the dice to drink anything water or ice-based in India. In fact, it's a roll of the dice to eat there at all. In five trips, almost three years in India, I've never gotten sick, except for the usual bronchial-thing. In that time I've had many, many lassis, of all types . . . no problem. I've eaten raw veggies . . . no problem, food from street stalls . . . same results. I have a stomach made for India . . . or I'm very lucky. Do what you feel comfortable doing regarding food and ice . . . so many things can get you there. Have a great trip. Scott

I would strongly disagree. Drinking lassi can play havoc with a persons stomach if proper food handling procedures are not being followed. You should be very careful at which restaurant you drink lassi and after one sip if something does not fee alright you should just leave the drink. You can get serious food poisoning from improperly prepared lassi.

Thumbs up Thanks guys

Well thanks for your replies. They seem to range from "There's nothing to worry about" to "It can make you seriously ill".

Yes, I know lassi shouldn't have water in but then as most of you know - that doesn't mean it doesn't!

And to the guy who said he has a stomach made for India mine is pretty lousy even in good old Blighty (England).

Thanks guys and see you out there.

Depends on the type of the restuarent you go. Check if the place is clean and the lassi is poured with long laddles. Anyway things have improved a lot in cities.

Hi if you really want to avoid all hassles, get some dahi (curds) from local mithai shops and add sugar and dilute it litlle water water if you want it slightly thin and churn it in mixer at home. Youc an add cardomoms, or saffron for flavor if you wish. Some people even add a dollop of butter on the churned lassi!

One more point: Have lassi only in 'decent' restaurants. The lassi will be thick (implies no water) and it is typically stored in the fridge (implies it is cold, but without the ice) - specify no ice anyways.

native here, the best food is undoubtedly punjab (pretty rich or rajasvi bhog). Go to any of the dhabas & get 1 to 11/2 ltr. of thick lassi with 2 inches of cream on the top & atleast 2 1 inch thick alu parathas to start the day. There u go to anybody's place it's Lassi first rather than water so if a Lassi addict Punjab is u'r place.

absolutely right. that is how we have it here in nasik. of course, to have it prepared in front of your eyes and served has a charm of its own. i mean the sardarji variety, which is the original.

wow. I must have a stomach of cast iron -- or good luck. I had lassis every day on both my trips so that totals about......60? and I stopped asking for "no ice".

More likely "they" will think you feel ill and want the lassi to settle your stomach!

People who are used to dealing with tourists will know that 'local' water can have serious consequences. But then, people who are used to dealing with tourists probably speak more languages than you do, so why the theatricals?

Excuse me? "theatricals", "speak more languages than I do"? wow, chill out, dude.

uh, actually no, in some of the restaurants I went to, especially outside Chennai, sometimes English was not that well understood (oh, but I forgot! I speak that miserable AMERICAN ENGLISH! that explains it!). and 9 times out of 10, I was offered the "local" water before I was offered "mineral" water. and if you had read my last post I said I had stopped asking for "no ice".

70shippy, I would think all lassis have water, because if they didn't, then it would just be a big glass of curd!
