Real Lassi is made from buttermilk - you'll have to travel to Punjab to experience that.

At home in Gurgaon, we make it with Whey.

Yogurt stirred up with water is a poor cousin of real Lassi.

So, Nick-H when are you headed this-a-way, so we can treat you to some real Lassi? I know that beer does nothing for you, but maybe the offer of Lassi could bring you up North.

It doesnt give me the runs ...If I met any of you it would probably be as you came out of mcdonalds with a big mac . Get with the program, stop being tourists. My stomach is fortified through authentic travel...only this can sate my hunger.

that's what i also try to keep in mind when in India, but when i was at the various Barista coffeeshops in Chennai and in Baga, their 'iced specialities' on the menu were just too much tempting... so i asked what about the ice, and they told me they have Bisleri ice cubs strictly used in all their ice-based drinks....
i drunk several of these delicious cold coffees, frappuccinos etc. and never had a complain.. apart from the intake of extra sugar...

I havent had any trouble with lassy, and it tastes so nice... But.... I did not know it was mixed with water. I can consider my self quite lucky I only got a bit ill at the end of the trip (and I know I have to blame the ice on my drinks the last day). The place looked super nice so I trusted the ice, how neive...

It shouldn't be... but there is the ice. Like with juice, best not to have ice in it.

I go to Karol Bagh motorcycle market every few days and I have now a ritual of getting one of the richest and smoothest lassi's that I have ever had.

This guy is in the 2nd Gali, actually 35 Naiwala.

I am going there again tomorrow.

Most of mine are home-made, so I am well aware of what goes into them. I can even use ice, as I can also be sure that the cubes were made from drinking water, being the person that put them in the freezer...

Take Control of Your Lassi!

Safe till a person isnt ill.
And yes, one can request Lassi with Mineral water if not local water.

" avoid the street vendors!" well, there I can at least see what and how they cook and how they look: skinny cook, yellow eyes, trembling hands - no, so sorry. Fat and friendly cook - the chances are better.
In any case, be it on the street or in the Gorakhpur Hilton: if the food tastes bad or if you have a suspicious feeling, spit it out and take no more from the meal.
And wash your hands. The average Westerner does not wash his hands before eating. The Indians see this and are ENGROSSED.
Did you realize this, dear Pariah-Hippie?

The plain ones are safer than the flavoured ones. I once ordered a mango one and it came with mango juice on top. It was only later that I realised that the juice had water in it.

A mango lassi is made with mango and lassi --- not with mango juice and lassi. If it is not mango season, it will not be available: if it is available off-season, you shouldn't be drinking lassi there!
