I am glad to see I am not the only one who piled on the kilos after India. 4 kgs in 3 weeks! All that Gulab Jamun and those chapatis! The food was awesome! Now I am battling the bulge although next week I am having a nasty wisdom tooth out - maybe that will help remove my india weight! Oh and by the way I packed a truckload of antidiarrhoea medication but nothing for constipation which was my main problem there, probably as I love their rice so much!

I lost about 20 pounds, which is quite a lot for me. When I weighed in at Delhi after nearly six months in India, I was shocked to find myself at the skinniest point of my adult life. The sorry joke amoung my fellow travelers was that men too often lose weight and the women tend to gain in... as you can see from this forum this is not always the case but it does make for an entertaining byline and source for commentary on the beach.
I didn't really get sick in India either, but I did go veg the entire time. I also made a conscious effort to gain weight by eating mountains of peanuts whenever I thought about it, plus lots of snack foods but... no dice. For those of you who gained weight... perhaps you don't have the luxuries of all the fatty, disgusting foods we have in North America, complete with hydrogenized oils and foods ala all the major food chains... |

you are right picklepak where I come from we have a healthy mediterranean diet pasta, veg, fish etc. So in India I was tucking in on those fantastic types of fried bread and wicked desserts I was bound to put on weight. My only complaint is that my boyfriend who ate exactly the same things did not put on any weight so maybe you are right about only the women gaining weight in India. Although he did not actually lose any weight - he just stayed the same!

this thread is so wierd, can't believe people have checked to see how much they gained or lost, I don't even know what weight I am now.

Why is it so weird to want to know what can happen to your body?
I haven't been to India yet, but every other trip I have lost weight even though I eat tonnes of food. But I am always active walking or hiking everywhere so that must account for it. |

I lost 5-6 pounds and ate so much !! I'm on the thin-side anyway so that was quite a loss for me, maybe the spicier food reved up the metabolism plus alot of walking. Going back Nov 2005, will see if the same thing happens?

Il ost about ten pounds and ate like a pig. I think that difference is you are eating three meals per day but moving around a lot. Research was done on some Amish women and they discovered that although the Amish tend to eat large meals they have such low obesity rates because they are well-rounded meals and they are very active throughout the day. I think this can apply to traveling, well for me anyway. For some reason when I go home too my appetite was supressed, my eating habits are still not the same, thank goodness, and I was only in India for three weeks. Isn't that how long they say it takes to break a habit?

I was stuffed by adopted Aunties....filled to the rim with kulfi, faloodas and gulabs, wahsed down with a healthy dose of diabetic-fit enducing masala chai.. Yes, I gained weight. Lost weight in Goa as I did not care for the food there -the only thing I liked was eating oatmeal on the beach, that was quite surreal!!

on a 3 week trip, i on average loose about 5-10 lbs, but in india, i probably lost less than 5 lbs, partially because we hardly did any hiking; ate a lot, even though not much meat but still lot of cheese in the food; and didn't get sick.
