The debate goes on, not all fat is unhealthy, animal fat is a good source of vitamins and minerals.
Transfats are known to cause cancer and found in most processed foods that need fat added such as cake bread. The health industry is a multi billion $ industry, I think most westerners where quite healthy until we where told to eat low fat, then came the cholesterol scare, lower your cholesterol or you will have a heart attack, no mention of the fact more people that die of heart attacks have low not high cholesterol. We have been told not to eat red meat, remove the skin off chicken, use skimmed milk fat free this fat free that and yet, we in the west are getting fatter and diabetes is at epidemic levels. Take up exercise, the guy who is attributed to inventing jogging dropped dead from a heart attack, while out jogging. Something is very wrong; I for one eat nothing processed with the exception of instant coffee Advertising is the key to selling anything with a health food stamp on it, |

I think you are confused
"the guy who is attributed to inventing jogging dropped dead from a heart attack, while out jogging."
I am pretty sure the "guy who invented jogging" was probably killed by a prehistoric animal, not a heart attack. I do know the person you are talking about and while he did not "invent" jogging he did write a good book about it. He died because he had a bad heart, genetic not caused by a poor diet or exercise. |

I doubt I will lose any weight at all. The food is so good here (I can't believe I ate okra and liked it!). I am trying to not over-eat even when we go out to fancy places just so I have a little hope.
I have to get up early to take a walk on the beach otherwise I get absolutely no exercise at all. They've got people standing by everywhere you go to make sure you never lift a finger. It's terribly annoying. Please, at least let me get a little exercise pouring my own beer! Also, we have drivers to drive us everywhere, I sit in front of a computer all day long working and people here start work so late, eat so late (dinner at 9 or 10pm? I'm usally asleep by then), and the only place to get decent coffee in the morning is at the office out of the Nescafe machine -- and that is full of sugar and chocolate. I already can't fit into my clothes thanks to whatever the heck they are putting in that natural food in the US. Or maybe it's just that I've reached that "certain" age. Sigh. If only I lived where I could always hide my blubber beneath a gorgeous Saree. |

My trips are normally one month long. I lose 5 kilos every time. In the following two months I recover the weight and even the strength. This time as we are in Christmas one month will be more than enough to get over the lost weight.
Of course, I like very much indian food but traveling alone and eating almost always alone, not having a beer at the table, the food doesn't taste the same. Jorge |

God forbid you ever *should* decide to let go on us...on us what?
First of all, we don't all appreciate being called "Yanks." Down where I'm from, we don't like it at all--something to keep in mind if you ever want your message to be heard. Of course, you're completely right about the American diet, and to a lesser extent, the Western diet. I've yet to visit India, but I've lost weight in Morocco, China, and Turkey while eating plenty--just eating healthier food and walking more. Unfortunately, most of the people who live around me don't get the opportunity. One thing you need to know is that here in the USA, the poor tend to eat fattening things. The healthier something is, the more it costs. Just something to keep in mind. My wife and I are both noticeably overweight, and I'm interested to see how we'll be received in India. In China, we were laughed at and stared at more than thinner Westerners. It got old, until someone told us that we were considered signs of prosperity, because in China, when you're poor, you hardly eat at all. We gave evidence that we weren't poor. For whatever reason, we found ourselves very popular at photo taking locations like the Great Wall and the Stone Forest. I wonder how India will be on that score. Anyway, I plan to take the stares and laughs in stride; to sweat and walk away calories; to eat well, somewhat adventurously, but avoiding diarrhea--well, that's what I plan. We've been eating better this past year or so, though, as I say, it does cost quite a bit more (we're not poor, but we have to save money for these trips...). We're not as big as we were in China, and we both were able to tackle Turkey with quite a bit more energy. So believe me, I understand the truth in what you write. In fact, I really think you'd have to live here in order to fully appreciate how much, and in how many ways, our culture encourages us to be pigs. But I ain't no damnyank(ee)! |

First time, I lost almost 10 kg. Intestinal infection/infestation.
Second time, I religiously kept to bottled water, which spared me from gut probs, despite trying several obscure eating places, prodded by my travel mate who had barely returned from a one year trip to China. My 7 kg loss should be attributed to extended walks in for example the Darjiling and Gangtok areas, and to my getting tired of the Indian cuisine. I thrive on northern European bread (which already in France is not to be found), pork and beef, but get bored by chicken and lamb with bones. |
