- watermelons!
- nimbu-paani, - tender coconut water / nariyal paani . in my experience this is one of the best. - buttermilk, with a dash of ginger, its terrific - lassi quite obvious from all of the above - a lot of water! avoid soft drinks - they will make you more thirsty some other stuff to keep you cool.. - onions - khus drinks - rooh afza - another favourite ( its a brand name, it is a concoction of many intersting things, watermelon one of them ) - sugarcane juice - well, if you are ready to make some compromises on the hygiene front.. light colored clothes cotton some ayurvedic oils that will chill your scalp so much that you will immediately hit the bed after you finish bathing for the prickly heat.. - frequent baths / avoid sweating (easier said than done ) - nycil powder( still one of the best) - cotton again |

Not mine, but a friend from India says he dampens either a light towel or sheet, lays it on the bed, and then sleeps/rests on top of that.

I wet a towel or sheet and lay it on top of me when I go to bed. As the water evaporates, it cools you down.
I also head to the hills.. Udhagamandalam - or Ooty to it's friends! Then there is "Salt Lime Soda". It is soda water with loads of squeezed limes and some salt - it helps to replace the salts that you lose through perspitation, the vitimin C is good for you, and it is very refreshing! |

Airconditioning full blast.
Some liquid on a lot of ice. (after driving an hour and a half in Delhi heat (47'c) 2 times a day - i think i deserve that.)

Yep! That's the only real solution! But if you can't do that try: - sitting around doing nothing, preferably in a shady spot where you can watch the world go by - wearing loose cotton clothing, preferably light colored - wearing a good sun hat - something "breezy" like a straw hat - drinking lots and lots and lots of fresh lime sodas (nimbu paani) - yum! (or you could settle for lots of plain water, in a pinch) - taking cool water showers/bucket baths - aaah! |

Beating the heat ?
This one's from my earlier days in India, when I was working for a Consumer Durables Company:
Our service department was receiving repeated complaints from a customer that his refrigerator was not giving the desired cooling. The technicians who attended the complaints found nothing technically wrong with the refrigerator. On the fifth complaint, the service manager himself went to the customer's house and inspected the appliance. He too found nothing wrong with it. However, he started questioning the household on the way the fridge was used - how much was it loaded with, how many times was its door opened, etc. etc. It was then that a little child in the household innocently remarked that the door of the refrigerator was open all night as his father slept before it on the floor !!! It was summer, you see !! Talk of ways of beating the heat !!! ![]()
