Hotel swimming pools and health safety
Should I be concerned about the water in hotel swimming pools the way I'd be concerned about non-bottled water?
I'm travelling with a boy who is twelve and in my planning I'd been thinking that even if he doesn't enjoy everything the adults want to do, we'll look for hotels with swimming pools so he can have that to look forward to. Then just today I wondered if I could assume that this would be safe for him (and us too if we decide to go swimming - but he's the one most likely to !). Any advice? |

That's a new one!
Its never any good being disillusioned by Health and Safety standards in India --- there aren't any to begin with. I've never heard anyone say that they caught anything from a hotel pool, so I guess it isn't a major concern.

I've had the same problem with my sisters kids when they come to India. They want to swim, and others want to panic.
5 star hotel pools, and those of some clubs, may be cleaner, but you are at risk from ingesting water, bacteria etc, as well as catching something from other users. Most good Indian pools do have a filteration plant and often claim good cleanliness standards. Hygiene in other pools will vary. To some extent, aren't these risks common to swimming pools all over the world? Finally, I have caught bacterial infection from swimming pools in India. Obviously nothing which killed me, though. |
