Hotel Break-in!

Just a message to inform all here about the positive side effects of continued vigalance concerning personal information and money.

Our hotel room was broken into, via a locked balcony door, while we were at lunch. They got nothing but fear and anger because we had nothing of value in the room, except for out two backpacks which we had cable locked to a solid object.

Stay vigalent out there people and stay away from shared balconies.

New Delhi

I was in New Delhi. At Ajays in Paharganj. It was a nice place. I have a sneaking suspicison is was one of the billions of Israeli people there. Just a suspicison and entirely not based in fact so noone jump down my throat about it. i know its irrational. but the guy that shared our balcony was an israeli and well, it would have taken one hell of a cheeky monkey to get to it any other way.

I'd still recommend Ajays. the staff was always nice to us. I think it was just because we dont look like the typical "dude, i just saw shiva in my pocket" backpacker types. anyway...

Hi Joseph

On the subject of cable locks, I am in the process of buying all the bits & pieces for our trip to India in a few months and was looking at cable locks. Can you tell me what length your lock is? Is it long enough to go around the pack or do you just loop it through a strap?

Thumbs up cable locks

I have a very light cable lock of about 72cm, i think. Its not very big but it is quite enought to cable my and my wifes packs together through the top strap (the one that you can hang the pack from).

Its not very thick and could be fairly easily cut through given the proper equipment. But i subscribe of the belief that anyone who will have the right equipment is probably going to get my bag even if i took more elaborate precautions. I'm really just trying to stop the opportunist from an easy snatch and grab.

The one i have i got from REI, it was too expensive probably around 25$ and has a resetabable combination to open. It is very usefull as well on the train and although i haven't been on one yet, i imagine it will be useful on the bus.

I looked at the uber "my god why would i ever want to carry this heavy of a pack lock" and decided against. Just dont take anything valuable.. and if you do keep it on you at all times.

But i and the wife are wierd ones. We hate cameras and walkmens and vidio recorders. So we really dont carry anything of value.

I always figured if i forgot what i have seen, well it wasn't that important to begin with, was it?

make your own cables for locking luggage

Re: above discussion

I have just made my own cable because I couldn't find any cables the thickness and length I wanted

It was very easy to make and cheap (I made them about 170cm long)
