hot hot HOT !

I am planning a three week trip to India - flying to Mumbai 3 May. I understand that this is the hottest time of the year. I was planning on doing the west coast. Is this a good move or would further north be more bearable ? I love beaches, but if its going to get too sticky should i head for the hills ?

beaches will be hot.

hills will be cool and crowded, at least the simla/nainital/mussorie types.

at this time of the year, i would head north and find a smaller off the main road kind of place in uttaranchal.. you will find lots of ideas on IM

New Delhi is the base for most of the North Indian hill-stations. You can either fly to Delhi or take the train(may be too late now for train reservations, as May is also the peak holiday month in India) from Mumbai.

Some of the hill-stations you may consider are Kasauli, Solan, Shimla, Chail, Narkanda, Fagu, Kullu and Manali; all in Himachal Pradesh. Then you have Chamba, Khajjiar, Dalhousie, Dharamsala and Palampur, also in Himachal Pradesh, but better approached from Pathankot, which is further north of Delhi.

In the state of Uttaranchal you have Nainital, Mussoorie, Almora, Binsar, Kausani, Ranikhet and Pithoragarh; plus a host of other destinations like Lansdowne, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Srinagar, etc. which are less frequented by tourists.

I flew into Mumbai in early May two years ago and found it quite hot. Instead of heading north, we went south to the Western Ghats, where it was very cool and comfortable. We headed to Kodaikanal (in Tamil Nadu) and Kumily (on the border of Kerala and T.N.), neither of which were particularly crowded. We also loved the backwaters and beaches of Kerala, which were certainly warm but at least benefiting from an ocean breeze. Certainly amazing...But I've never been up north...
