See this thread for some advice about ear pain in airplanes.
As I suffer from motion sickness, but not on planes, just on scary buses on mountain roads in the middle of the night, the best thing I found was to just grab a roll of heavy duty breath mints. Peppermint or Spearment both work. This came on the advice of someone and surprisingly it worked. Mike |

Fortunately, I've never suffered from either on air journeys; and hope I never do !
Ja~martini34, travel by the AC Class in trains, avoid road travel for long journeys unless of course the train option does not exist. And when you do have to travel by road, opt for a taxi/deluxe bus, wherever possible.

ouch, I get really severe earpain when the plane is descending. See your GP before you go, I never have but I believe they can help with that nowadays (I thought I read that somewhere). Next time I go I'm going to do that. Or at least they'll be able to advice. Sucking on a boiled sweet and swallowing a lot helps but I get it really severely so it's not enough. And then I end up deaf for the rest of the day.
For motion sickness, which I don't get except on a schooner (I went on a sailing trip once on a schooner and instantly sicksickness hit) you can get pills also from the doctor, luckily the schooner captain had those and the nausea went away really quickly or you can take them before nausea hits. |

Oh, I just read your article, Mike, very useful. And I now remember I did use those techniques last time I flew international, I was doing these breathing exercises and holding my nostrils and stuff all the way down and the passenger next to me was looking at me like I was crazy but it did work.
