Cod semen is considered a delicacy here in Japan. Loads of the locals keep telling me to try it. I think I'll pass.
I taught a five year old student yesterday who sat and picked her nose for the entire 40 minute lesson. She ate the lot as well. Guess she won't be getting sick any time soon!

not quite pane e panelle
I had tuna sperm in Sicily and I saw it in the fish market in Siracusa. It's white (surprise) and quite solid. It's salty and rubbery (yeah, ha,ha), and tastes a lot like the female equivalent, deep red eggs called "bottarga". Does anybody know what it's called? I thought it was "tume", but an Internet search on that word has been fruitless. It was prepared with oil and vinegar, preserved raw, like they do lots of things, including eggplant. The waiter would only say it was an internal part of the tuna, and I had to ask the guy at the market what it was.
Sorry for turning every thread into a culinary one, my obsession. ![]() |

Here, finally internet has caught up with your curiosity: ....or line-caught tuna; and lattume di tonno, tuna sperm that is layered with salt for a month, washed, dried, and served in thin slices over salad or breaded and fried. Originally used as an aphrodisiac, lattume is today both a delicacy and a curiosity. (http://www.slowfoodsantacruz.org/abo...m/atlantic.htm) |

Antipasto (or is it antiparto?) di mare
Thanks, Sunil, you can always be counted on when it comes to food!
So it's "lattume"... Since "latte" means "milk" maybe this word comes from it, as lattume is indeed whitish. I couldn't find the word in my fat Dizionario Garzanti, but I have now found a steamy Internet definition to tax your brain: latte di pesce che si trova nei maschi nel periodo della frégola e con la quale si fecondano le uova. Google gives you lots of fun pages and recipes too. I didn't eat it fried or "over salad" (an American or French concept, not Italian); I had it as part of an antipasto di mare with other fish goodies, in the lovely town of Erice...ah the nostalgia ... and only later saw it in the fish market in Siracusa.I already knew that "tume" was a milk product, like a salted fresh cheese, but when I wrote the previous message I had confused the two words. If fate ever brings you to the Boston area, let's have an IM cookout! And now, back to boogers... ![]() |

Drinking urine is not that uncommon as one might think. Do a google on Urine Therapy or Urology and find out for yourselve.
And yes Ive been told to eat my semmen and met someone who was practesing this, but I think its a pretty negative and weird thing. Some kind of Tantric (sex without ejaculation one might say) sex sounds more sensible in that case, if it exists and work I dont know... But to eat from my nose? Well there is a saying in China, something like everything is medicine in small amounts or something like that.... ![]()

Hmm ... the thought of people eating the mucilaginous accretions of the nares is revolting ...
But I think I would rather people did that than leave the little buggers smeared on the walls of hotel rooms and train cars or on restaurant tables and chairs that I might have to use after them ... |

Nothing is illegal until you get caught~

This is so true!
There was nothing worse than having to clean the underside of tables when I was waitressing......EWWW! So many little crusty bits to scape off.....just look under the table the next time you are out to eat at your favorite local establishment, just don't eat them....I'm sure it won't work unless they are yours!! ![]()
