Have You Ever Been Physically Attacked In India,,,,,,,,
In the light of all the recent posts regarding Pepper Spray & self protection, I'd like to ask you all whether or not you've ever actually been Physically Attacked !. We must have spent nigh on hundreds of years travelling between us, I personally have slept anywhere & everywhere, from inner city pavements to every type of hotel/guest house, Under the stars on
beaches, to marble floors in temples, chai shop benches to train stations, most of the time alone, occasionally with a companion. Using a little common sence & normal precautions I have never been attacked or even unduly worried about any situation I've found myself in, Nor likewise I can't ever remember meeting anyone who had,,,,,,,,, Perhaps we can reverse the Idea and reassure newbies to India that they don't have to go there prepared for the worse,,,,,,,,,, Om Shanti |

I'm happy to say that I have never been attacked on any of my travels - nor have I even had anything stolen. I've been ripped off - yes, but nothing worse than that! The only times I have been in frightening or dodgy situations have all been here at home. Similarly, I sadly know friends who have been physically attacked - but these all took place here and not abroad.

Nope.
Well, except for that Jodhpur restauranteur who tried to convince me to dine at his establishment by physically dragging me in! More entertaining than anything else. |

I've experienced the wayward hands business a couple of times, but nothing that a sharp elbow to the ribs couldn't fix!
I've absolutely never felt threatened in any way though ![]() |

Yes!!!! althoug it was more sexual harrisment then attack. It was on a bus in Allappey, Kerala. There was an empty seat beside me and this lady with babe in arms sat beside me.She was not the smallest of ladies and the baby had Henna writing on it's face.If i could have read mallayallam this might have helped with identification later.I done the usual cochi coo's (to the baby) and then the assault began. With every bounce of the bus, around every corner, she encroached on my space. After, to me an eternity, she got up walked down the bus, gave the baby to someone else, returned and calmly resumed the assault!! A while later, stood up went and retrieved the baby and without looking back got of the bus ,leaving me feeling violated and humilated!!!!! I did get on the same bus the next morning but she wasent there !!!Dam.

I´ve never felt physically threatened. I´ve also marvelled at times at amount of restraint shown by Indians/Ladakhis/Tibetans in facing abusive behavior.

Slept rough throughout Europe ..Ie park benches beaches etc whilst travelling Europe when I was younger
I've travelled extensively throughout Middle east and Asia and most of western Europe Never been physically attacked ...never been threatened ...never felt like I was in danger from attack Never been to America though ...and as most of the posters who advocate carrying defensive weapons come from the States...this may say more about American culture than actual dangers faced whilst travelling ...time to lower the fences and put doen the guns guys So to answer NO NEVER EVER well unless you include a crazed cow in Udaipur ...But I reckon that shouldn't count as its holy and I'm not Bryan

oh, i've just remembered, i was struck by a long wooden pole (dunno what they used it for) when i got lost in some "off beaten tracks" areas of the Old Delhi... i was attempting to walk from the New Delhi train station to Jama Masjid , using my very abbrevated map. at some point all English language signs disappeared leaving only Hindi signs... i took the wrong turning, looked around and realised i was the only woman pedestrian on the street (and the only tourist of course). i continued walking - i am rather stubborn - but then i met some violent youths and got hit by a stick in the back... i sworn back at them in Russian and was disappointed that they could not comprehend the nature and the degree of my verbal abuse... i decided not to tempt the fate any more and walked to the nearest rickshaw stand. took an authorickshaw, as any self-respecting woman in the area
. but then it took us half an hour to make a journey to Jama Masjid which was only 10 min walking time away (through some busy market).not that i was dressed immodestly (was covered from top to bottom, it was Feb and rather chilly). but the pepper spray would not have helped, the pole was rather long was i scared? probably, don't remember. but i should have been watching my environment better and check what the local women do. and, i don't hold it against india i was held at a gunpoint at the doorstep of my house in russia... once i escaped outside i headed straight to the Gun shop to buy a nerve gas spray which i lost at a airline security control a few months later (never used it)... have been subject to an attempted rape in my student hostel in st. petersburg (escaped but then was afraid to go back home for a few days)... have been beaten up at home by a boyfriend who was a practising boxer (spent three weeks in a hospital)... have been robbed of my handbag twice in london (and only in london)... all above happened to me at home: i don't think travel increases your chances of being attacked. |

I never felt unsafe in India. I've stayed there for a total of seven months, a couple of them travelling alone.

I did have police men going through my bag though, taking my condoms and my Pen etc in goa (small things) in the midle of the night a bit drunk on my way home from a drunk night... that was a Bit spookey... and I did have a camera and a watch stolen on a buss right out of my bag... BUT YEAH I HAVE NEVER BEEN ATTACKED! ![]() PEACE OUT! Fear attracts trouble!

Correction
Now that I think of it, yes I was attacked by a... mouse!
It was in the room of my hotel in Dharamsala. There was this mouse who tried to climb on my bed a couple of times, I don't know if it was because it was cold or did he want to bite my toes. Anyway, it was a homeric battle to convince him to vacate the premises. |
