Gyms.
Just did a search and read a few threads, but still have a question..
I am doing Rehab on a shoulder surgery, in the late stages of recovery. I can swim a mile, so its all good, but I need to stay fit. I am brining thera-bands, but I was wondering how easy it is to find a place to work out at? Do 4 or 5 star hotels usually have gyms? Are there gyms regularly in India? Do they charge by the session, cause I will be traveling alone, day to day... What am I to expect? Aloha! |

Gyms
5 - star & 5 - star deluxe are the ones that provide that amenity.

Awsome!
I got the LP, 5 star hotels can be far inbetween.. Do you suppose that they let alone travelers with only a backpack use the gym? Do they usually charge by the session and if so, what is it? Like 100rs tops? MeCasa, Im born and breed here in Hawaii, grew up on the North Shore, however I cant run far at all. |

Not all do though and some that do are quite antiquated. For instance the Hyatt in Delhi has an excellent Gym that many local Delhites have a membership to. The Imperial Hotel, one of my favourites, another 5 star deluxe - did not (although the Imperial Spa was suppose to open this Fall ???? anybody know if it is open yet?)

Guest Fees
I think most accept Guest fees, so you should be okay with a little moolah

It depends
Hyatt would be much more than 100 rps maybe like 1000
but I'm sure you can find something to your budget ![]() |

You might have better luck finding a yoga class
That's a darn good workout if you find the right one. |

There are lots of private gyms in the cities these days. Ten years ago there were not so many but over the last five years there has been an explosion in their numbers. I pay 25 Rs per session for a decent gym here in Chennai. In Delhi I pay 50. They are not upmarket affairs but are fairly good. I have paid 15 Rs to train in gyms that are pretty basic and not too good at all. Monthly rates are of course much better value. You'll have no poblem in finding a half decent gym in the cities and there's no real need to pay 5 star prices at a posh hotel.

ColinT,
thats good to hear. Not bad prices either. Aside from the cities, what about towns? Not villages and rural areas, but your averge town... Do they sport some small gyms, for the most part? (kind of an odd question, heh) |

I've always managed to find a gym. Even in small towns - sometimes very basic though. If you need Nautilus, treadmills etc you are probably going to have to go to a 5 star hotel or seek out the plushest gym in in a bg city. If all you are after (like me) is a decent range of free weights, dumbells and a few pulleys then there's no problem. It is also worth noting that most gyms are open from about 5.30 am to 9.00 am and then from 4.00pm to 9.00 pm. So if you hate early morning training get there at 4.00pm. After about 5.30pm they tend to get packed.

Wazen said he is rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Please do not suggest any type of yoga class -- yoga is not "one size fits all", especially if Wazen has never done yoga before. I don't know what type of surgery he had, but I am very familiar with rehabbing shoulders and shoulder issues, since I've had shoulder surgery for severe arthritis. There are many different types of yoga and all instructors have different levels of expertise. If he is rehabbing from surgery, that would require a different yoga style as opposed to a style that gives someone a "workout". Going to inappropriate class combined with an instructor who may not be familiar with joint rehab can be a yoga recipe for disaster. |

Thanks for the information.
Im glad to hear some basic weights are around. Who needs a treadmill in india!? Just some free weights and a mirror is okay. Yoga sounds so interesting, never got into it though strech for an hour a day anyway. Just FYI it was arthroscopic shoulder surgery with a bicep tendon tear, torn cartiladge and streched ligaments, with degenerative bone diease in the aycromium(sp?). It was from three dislocations bodysurfing, Waimea Bay and Off The Walls. |
