To suggest wearing modest clothes is one thing, to suggest making a major change in one's appearance is quite another.

Me? I wouldn't dream of dressing any other way from being comfortably myself...

It's simply being aware of cultural norms and respecting them, or at least not disrespecting them. That is not the same thing as trying to "hide" or "fit in" or "blend in," that's something different altogether.

It's since 1993 that I have short hair (male style), and hadn't any problems for this while in India.
My first time I decided to cut them (from shoulders to under ear) just to be a little bit comfortable with my hygiene.
This is a personal thing, don't think it has something to do with travel in India.

I've been growing mine since about June especially as I want to be able to pull my hair back off my face - for mainly practical reasons

try having very curly hair like mine in India. Not many Indian women have hair like mine. In fact, people wanted to touch it all the time....

My hair is about shoulder length and very curly -- think Bernadette Peters' (Broadway actress) style of curly hair (mine is naturally curly, no perms), corkscrew curls. It is hard to pull back (I try) because there are many layers, so when I pull it back, most of my hair pops out anyway - and I hate putting a bunch of clips and grease in my hair to make it flat.

I made the huge mistake of getting my hair cut a week before I left -- with the humidity, my hair stood on end, and I went from looking like Bernadette Peters to Sai Baba hair....scary! However, I did figure out what to do with it after I was there a week....

For my trip in March, I've decided not to cut it.

my hair goes manic in the heat - it seems to have a mind of it's own so mid-lenth is best for me as I can keep it out of the way

I too have curly shoulder length hair cut in layers, yogagal, and can't pull it back into a ponytail - it looks ridiculous. So yogagal, you say you figured out what to do with your hair after one week. What did you end up doing?

yes, ridiculous is too mild of a word....

basically what I did was.....after I washed my hair in the morning, I would comb it straight back (I always let my hair air dry and just run my fingers through it -- a hair dryer? what's that?), then used a folded bandana or a pretty scarf as a headband, not across my forehead, but back on my head so it held my bangs back and the sides back behind my ears. I also found a Himalaya Herbals shampoo that was WONDERFUL for my type of hair, kept the curl, but helped the frizz in the humidity (my hair is almost like african-american hair).

So with my hair tied back like that, behind the scarf or bandana, and using that shampoo, when my hair dried, it looked halfway decent and I did not look like Sai Baba head.

last time I was in India I was growing my hair out from a short crop and in the end I was so sick of it I had braids put in - it cost next to nothing and was a brilliant solution whilst I was there

you mean corn rows?? tiny braids close to your scalp?

I thought of that, but I think my hair has too many layers to do that, besides which, my hair is also thick, so I would not want to sit that long in the hair salon! I hear it is time-consuming to do corn rows....

Yeah that's what I had done - it was a life saver. I've got pretty thick hair and it was all cut into layers - I guess it was quite time consuming but definitely worth it because I didn't have to worry about my hair once after that

I wouldn't cut long hair short for a trip to India in order to fit in, because most Indian women seem to have long hair at least where I have travelled in India.
Also, where it's hot & humid, it's comfortable to tie long hair in a bun on top of the head for the night so that the hair doesn't make your face & neck sweat. Well, it's comfortable during the day too, although during the day I prefer more "conventional" hairstyles. I stand out nonetheless because my hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes are blonde, and often Indian men and women at me.

Had I short hair, I wouldn't feel the need to let my hair grow for a trip to India, but I wouldn't cut long hair short to fit in.

I'll probably cut it all off within a week of getting there, as im sure it going to annoy the hell out of me if it's really hot, but im still curious to find out if i'll be looked upon as more of a freak than i already am!!!
