GOA - anti malaria pills needed?

Hi:

So far with everything I've read, I will need to take anti malaria pills for my trip to Goa this Dec.
Please let me know what you think of MALARONE. Seems like the easiest drug to take with less side effects. All opinions welcome.
Thanks!

I had absolutely no side effects. It is more expensive than Lariam, but it's worth it.

many health agencies (see UK's eg) are not indicating that it is no longer necessary to take anti-malarials when travelling in most parts of india. furthermore you will be in goa in december which is outside the monsoons season and the risk is decreased.

it is a personal choice if you want take anti-malarials and you should consult your doctor for advice

i used to take lariam but will no longer take anti-malarials unless i'm in certain parts of india during the monsoons.

happy travelling

I visited Goa in February this year for 3 weeks and didnt take any anti-malaria tablets, in fact, I didnt even receive a bite from a mozzie. The only time I was bitten was outside of Mumbai airport. We did use insect repellant and found that was all that was needed. Enjoy your trip.

I've been going to Goa for a number of years now. I'm not aware of malaria risk there - besides it will be the dry season.

I'm going to Goa in March, for a total of three weeks, and I'll probably be going to Hampi, and I'll be in Mumbai for a couple of days at either end of the trip - I've been advised, in pretty much equal numbers, to take anti-malarials, and to avoid them as its not necessary.

Is there somewhere to go for a definitive response?

If there is, it's not here If you have time to kill though, you can search this site for all those opinions you mentioned and then some.

The definitive response is:-

Visit your GP or local travel clinic and follow their advice ... they are the professionals after all.

Steambuff...

Well, yes... but you'll get different advice from different doctors in different countries! So it's only definitive as far as it goes.

But it's still the best advise I've ever heard
