Getting specs in india

I am heading to india in februrary to teach in pukriabong near darjeeling for 3 months and then intend to travel for a month. I remember seeing something elsewhere on india mike praising the optitians in india and would love to get a spare pair made for my travels as the prices are so extortionate here in the uk. My prescription is around the -6/7 mark (i will check!) and i will therefore probably need to have the lenses thinned. Could anyone advise how easy this might be in delhi or darjeeling and how long it would possibly take? Do optitians stock fairly contemporary and affordable frames, and do you think an india first-timer see her way to ordering some without too much trouble?

Many thanks!

Yes it is easy to get specs made in India & the quality is very good. You can get the latest frames & lenses too. For the best lenses visit Zeiss, Bauch & Lomb outlets in Delhi.

I have not seen the "ready in one hour" type of service that we're used to in UK here in Chennai; maybe the bigger Northern cities have it?

Nor have I seen the more fancy types of frame like bendy titanium (it's nice not to snap your frames when you sit on them...).

But you can get cheap local frames or more expensive imported frames. You can get the same brand-name optics. It will be cheaper.

Unless you need special lenses you can get specs done in a couple of hours but the branded shops will take at least one day.

My glasses were made overnight by a shop in Connaught Place - I went in the late afternoon and they were ready when they opened the next morning. From memory they had the super-bendy kind available, but I didn't get them
The place I went to is called Optical Palace and I'd recommend them, I've been to them twice now and both times they've been great.
