rom what I've read, when you get Malaria, you get flu like symptoms including fever, chills, etc, that last for a period of a few days, then can completely disappear, only to return again 2-3 days later. If left untreated, serious problems can result.
I am travelling in India and on Doxycycline, and my question is this: I understand that Doxy will not stop me from getting Malaria, so how would my reaction to the Malaria be different than someone not taking drugs? Would I still get the flu-like symptoms, but maybe not as bad? Would the doxy prevent it from returning 2-3 days later, essentially limiting the sickness to one short bout? Would it essentially cure the malaria, resulting in me not needing take some other medication? If you know of any websites that explain this, please post - there are MANY that talk about doxy in general as a treatment, but none that explain my questions above. Thanks Sting |

prevention, not cure
Here are good websites on malaria (specifically relating to india) from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
http://www.cdc.gov/travel/indianrg.htm http://www.cdc.gov/travel/regionalmalaria/indianrg.htm Doxycycline is a PREVENTATIVE measure, not a "cure" for malaria. (ie, it should prevent you from getting malaria in the first place.) If you have serious questions or concerns, you're probably best off asking a doctor. |

Whatever prophylaxis you're taking, you'd take a different drug for treatment if you contracted malaria. If you have any doubt, take the course anyway.

Is it ok to go on taking Doxycycline? Some pro should discuss this issue. My instinct says uncalled for antibiotic medication can not be good.

Take Muscovite's 2nd URL to read the clinical treatment report! Doxy is included in one of the treatments. Please note that its a lot more complicated than that. It takes a trained practitioner and tests to develop the appropriate regimine. Also, malaria is a lot more than fever and you may likely need care..
