getting a typhoid vaccine in india
i'm having trouble finding an oral typhoid vaccine at the travel clinics in my city. injection is available (though costing at least US$75) but i'd prefer oral as it lasts longer. (5 years as opposed to 2.)
that, combined with the cost, has me thinking about getting it while i am in india. i know that would mean i would be "unprotected" for the first two weeks of travel... but, well, i might be willing to take that "risk". does anyone have information, advice or referrals about obtaining an oral typhoid vaccine in delhi? (this will be my fourth time there, and i'm familiar with the city. i'll be staying in lajpat nagar or mandi house.) thanks. |

In San Frnacisco, the typhoid protection is the same price for either oral or injection: $79.
I'd get it in the US and give it time to kick in.

i'll probably end up getting the injection here, but it is really absurd... all expenses are out of pocket, of course (though i have good insurance) and you can't just go get an oral vaccine at your GP's. (because it is live.) you have to pay for a consultation at a travel clinic and then they will give you a vaccine.
so, i can get an injection at my GP's office for $75. but if i want an oral vaccine, she has to send me to a travel clinic. travel clinic is minimum $130 dollars... going all the way up to $175. it is an insane rip-off... i've travelled a lot, know my vaccination history, etc., etc... i don't need someone to sit me down and walk me through it. and it is only because i know what to ask for that i've found out that two of the less expensive clinics don't have an oral vaccine in stock. so that puts me back at settling for a shot and going to my GP's office. but it also makes me think of how much darn money i could save (or donate to help typhoid prevention!) if i got the vaccine in india! |

Well, think about the great trip you'll have when you don't get typhoid!
I get my jabs at the San Francisco Public Health Department, which have their own travel clinic. I don't recall ever paying a consultation fee; I go in with a list of what I need and it costs a couple of hundred dollars ... but that's okay. There are plenty of things in India that will make us sick for which there are no immunizations! |

I just took the Typhoid vaccination - orally, and had an allergic reaction to it ( not fun!) I now have to go get the shot on monday and I leave for India in a week.
Anyways, I would ask the physician what form of the vaccination is least likely to cause an allergic reaction. |

that's too bad about your reaction! i've had both multiple times over the years with no reactions to either... except soreness at the site of the shot! ;(
