gay harassment?

i just saw this:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/M...ow/2753740.cms

wonder if it's a new trend in indian police circles to target homosexuals. or is it something that has always happened in the past but gone unreported.

Dont know the answers to your questions, haven't heard of any other reports of other police raids against homosexuals.

It would be simple to say that this is just the cops being heavy handed or looking for easy money. Similar 'raids' have been conducted on farmhouse parties in other cities too, including Hyderabad, targeting organised parties with girls brought in from India and abroad to dance or otherwise entertain the guests.
There have been charges of drug use, too.

Not sure about the law, and on what basis such raids are conducted, against homosexual or heterosexual parties.

Homosexuality is criminalised under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which is a remnant of Victorian era and was first introduced in the late 1800's during the British Raj.

Without knowing the details, I thought so too (re: criminalisation) but there is a quote in the link saying nothing criminal was happening, so wasn't sure what that meant.

When a man approaches you, holds your hand for a long while and asks you to come to his appartment, have some whisky and talk frankly, while he looks deeply into your eyes - there is a chance he is a homosexual?

Why resurrect a five-month-old thread just to post this? Does it have any relevance to the subject?

Regardless of how broadminded we may be here, as pointed outy by jyoti homosexuality is illegal in India and hence the Police are only doing their job when they take action. So it is not harrassment but law enforcement. Add this to the list of many stupid laws in India.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_India

Quote:
Homosexual relations are legally still a crime in India under an old British era statute dating from 1860 called Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises 'carnal intercourse against the order of nature.' The vague nature of the legislation has resulted in it being used against a wide range sexual behaviour like oral sex (heterosexual and homosexual), sodomy, bestiality, etc. The punishment ranges from ten years to lifelong imprisonment.
The relevant section reads:
Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.[18]

Dormant Indian Anti-Gay Laws Are Still Bad Anti-Gay Laws

An interesting debate on www.livemint.com blogs on this very issue.

Govt. may scrap outdated gay law

Today, Times of India

Quote:
In 96 hours, the government might finally say it will scrap a 148-year-old law dating from British times, which criminalizes gay sex.

It has taken eight long years and much debate for India to get to the stage of even thinking seriously about decriminalizing homosexuality. If Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code were repealed, it would be a giant leap forward for AIDS prevention in a country with one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world.

The New Indian Express is doing its bit for acceptance and the eradication of ignorance with a whole weekly section on sexuality.

in india at least, IMO - HIV is more widespread in hetrosexual activities... sex-workers in them metros / truck drivers who take it home / mainlining drug addicts: the north-east in particular.

whatever it is... yay! for the government to have scrapped section 377. i hope they go through with it.

and talking about moral policing whateverthatmeans... take a look at this.
