gastritis - what to eat to get better?

Hi,

I've been having some slight stomach pain after eating for the past several weeks, i thought little of it. Recently the pain was more intense and constant, so i went to the doctor and he diagnosed gastritis.

Has anyone else had this? Do you know what to eat/drink (and not to) to get better?

What i have beeen recommended thus far:

To drink milk
Eat plain rice with curd and a little salt
Drink Water
King Coconut (i'm in sri lanka)
Vegetables are ok (i think...)
Bananas

To Avoid:
Tea/Coffee, Fizzy drinks, any greasy food, bread, acidic fruit such as mango/pineapple

I've stopped taking the medicine as a friend (sri lankan) here told me it can cause more problems, so i'm going to concentrate on a strict diet and lots of rest to get better.

Your friend knows better than the doctor so you'd better ask him/her.

Nothing better than this. But make sure the water is less sweet and somewhat salty. As the nut matures, the water turns thick and sweet. A real tender nut would have a lot of salty-swet water. This is a good medicine.

well that is not a good idea.
watching your diet, yes. not taking medicine that was prescribed to you... usually not a good thing. those medicines help stop the overproduction of acid that obviously your stomach is not regulating on its own. gastritis can also be caused by an infection, so if you were prescribed antibiotics and you do not take them the infection can get worse and cause sepsis.

i think you should go back to your doctor, or see another doctor, then make sure you understand well what you should do or not do. Do not not not think you can simply solve this on your own thru trial and error... you could end up with a terrible ulcer (gastritis is a precursor to ulcers).

Yes, things like tender coconut milk can help, but only with certain forms of gastritis. Other kinds it can irritate and make you more sick.

In short, gastritis is nothing to mess with. Do not rely on folk cures and advice from a message board. Go to a reputable doctor and understand the underlying reasons for your condition.

why would taking the meds cause more problems? Is your friend a doctor?

smallsquirrel is correct -- gastritis is nothing to mess with since it affects the stomach lining. last year I had gastroENTERITIS which affects the small intestine and I ended up in the hospital for 3 days with IVs.

listen to your doctor.

I was treating my gastritis with:

no more coffee, nothing that is hard to digest......so I mostly was eating "babyfood", basmati-rice, drank a lot of herbal teas and took the ayurvedic "Triphala" every evening before going to sleep.......

after 2 weeks I felt a lot better and I introduced more solid food for lunch, after 3 weeks my stomach felt better than ever and I decided to stick to some new habits like eating easy digestable food, more soups and mush.......instead of falling back to my coffee habit I switched to coffee substitute/cereal coffee and I try to avoid white flour and white sugar......

apart from a healed stomach I also realised that certain slight pains in the shoulders and lower back are also gone....so it definitely was very beneficial fasting

Depending on the meds you're taking, they can upset your stomach more - if you haven't been eating and your stomach is empty. Many people have sensitive stomachs for meds; many meds suggest to take on a full stomach.

Many vegetables - unless you boil/steam the hell out of 'em - can cause problems too. Again, especially if you haven't eaten in while. Many vegetables are very fibrous and unless the fibers are broken down, your stomach will work hard to do that.

Curd and papaya always works for me. Met a Swiss guy who made a tea out of the dried skins of papayas. He swore by it. Lassi's are another favorite of mine; no sugar or salt, just curd and papaya/mango.

But as many people have suggested, don't mess around too long with a bad stomach. There are nasty things over there that aren't to be messed with for too long.

herbal bitters and soothing agents are the best remedy for gastritis, caused by infection or just acid problems (high or low). Triphala is more for the lower bowels. Goto an ayurvedic Dr or a herbal shop and ask for
these herbs:
Andrographis panniculata - Hindi: Kalmegh, Sanskrit:Bhunimba
this is very bitter but very good!

Glycyrrhzha glabra (Licorice)- Hindi: Mulethi, Sanskrit: Yashtimadhu
Plantago ovata - Hindi: Isapghul, Sanskrit:Ashwakarnabeez

these two can be taken as a sweet powdered tea

take the herbs straight after eating

If you can get them in tablets they will be more palatable, or you can ask for a made up mix.

the general diet advice already given is reasonable, small frequent meals, limit the hot curries and fatty meals, herbal teas are great, no chai, no alcohol, salads and green veges as much as you can.

get well soon

Dr P
