Found Imodium in India!

Wow, I've been here almost six months (in 5 days) and I never thought to ask if they had imodium in the chemist shops. I just assumed they didn't have it. I ran out of imodium after like 2 months here. And I didn't even use it unless I was going somewhere without decent toilets and I had the runs.

Hm. But I found one small imodium pill in my luggage the other day and stopped at a chemist shop and showed them. Wow, they had some! 3 rupees a pill and I haven't found anything better than imodium.

So, don't worry so much about stocking up on all those pills. You can find almost anything in India, and cheaper than the US/Europe

I first took it in India. My surprise was that the same thing is sold in UK!!!

But it doesn't work well for me: I bring bottles of old-fashioned Kaolin & Morphine Mixture ---which I cannot get here.

I've tried several meds here in India, and none would work for me. Imodium works right away. The only problem is, it works too well and will stop me up for a day or two!

I'm sorry to hear that you are in regular need of it.

I have found that the tummy upsets have become 24-hour things that it's actually not worth taking anything for --- which is an improvement on a week of always making sure there's a loo nearby !

I thought you could get any drugs in India, from imodium to ice, so I knew I would be able to get anything in India. What a land!

Loperamide HCL

Is the scientific name (even in India )

They will know it when you ask for Immodium though.

I'd be very cautious about buying drugs in India! I saw a documentary and most of the drugs there are illegally manufactured. Many a person has died because of it. So you really don't know what your really taking!

this problem, however, is by no means unique to india.
while many "fake" medicines may be produced in india, there is a worldwide market for the stuff, and other countries will pay higher prices than the indian market.

While this is true, you'd also be surprised at the number of drugs that the western pharmeceutical companies are now having manufactured in India for sale in the west.

Sorry, but that is nonsense, and the kind of nonsense that is quite wrongly frightens people.

India's patent laws are not the same as other countries Although there have been recent changes, patents on drugs were not recognised.

I'm sure that that made lots of drug manufacture 'illegal' in the eyes of US and European drug companies.

There is nothing wrong with the Indian pharmaceutical manufacturing trade in general, and you can buy your drugs from pharmacies here without worry.

The article makes it look as if you are at greater risk of buying counterfeit drugs (and yes, they are made and sold in India, so are dud fire extinguishers ) if you have to take something very expensive in USA. Forgers are more likely to put that kind of effort into forging high-value currency notes. I really doubt that there is a major problem in buying day-to-day medicines here in India.

Some phials contained cheap generic versions of the drugs named on the packaging;
British National Health policy: to buy 'cheap' generics, rather than pay for the name on the box!

Please, people.... do not add this to the list of reasons to be frightened of India!

From the BMJ article :
Quote:
..the growing flood of counterfeit drugs that threatens the health of Americans and the integrity of their pharmaceutical companies.
The main problem here , IMO, lies in the second part or more precisely : their profits. The examples mentioned were all high cost medications , the profit margin on counterfeiting day to day medications like antibiotics would be extremely low.

And anyone with a basic medical training who uses terms like " cheap generics" is basically pulling a fast one on you : generics are the same substances, period.

Getting your meds before you set out is mostly a question of convenience. The one thing that remains important is to discuss your drug strategy with your travel clinic/doc so the interaction issue is laid at rest. Get the prescription, and buy at home (next time I´ll do it in India) or note down the generic names and doses and get it after arriving.
