Monk, I think your insights are wasted where people take an antibacterial agent (Cipro) for a virus not knowing the difference. Google is also wasted..

i go for norofloxin (2x a day, 3 day)
if problem does not go away, move to cipro as regimented.

A bit puzzled here : norofloxin and cipro both come from the same group of antibiotics (quinolones) and have similar indications.. maybe you`ve used different strengths ?

In one way it is great to be able to take responsibilty for oneself and just buy the meds you believe you need without officialdom telling you can't have it...

But India has doctors as well and pharmacists! Nobody is going to force you to take their advice, but it will be cheap, and you can go straight from there to the pharmacist.

It is nice to have some reassurance too... I cut my head on a billboard the other day (after negotiating a great elctrical structure with lots of sharp edges I go and walk into something one inch wide!). I was pretty sure It did not need stitching, that it looked worse than it was and that I should just leave it alone aprt from keeping clean. Popped along to the doctor who agreed entirely and didn't charge me anything for agreeing!

Unfortunaly I hat to visit a doctor twice when I was in India. Due to an alleric
reaction.

Those guys helped me out a lot, for free! What took more then two months to
diagnose in the Netherlands, they did in 5 minutes! And they solved the problem!!!

The hospitals are very clean, they have disposable needles everywhere. It is NOT
a third world country.

Just relax, you be better of in an Indian hospital then an European hospital.

per the norofloxin/cipro argument. you dont want to just reach for the strongest meds. cipro is really broad spectrum and powerful -you may encounter something else you need it for but have built up immunity.

yeah edward - if its virus, nothing will really help you -but if you have some sort of infection with that virus then you MAY need meds.

i lacerated my foot way out in pulau weh years ago. it was so thrashed i felt so sorry for myself and my poor footie. i stopped doctoring it an dwent to town and to hospital. it was a little blue i was so worried. the nurses and doctor were astonished as to where i had been and how long and how well it was healing and no infection. after the nurses left the doctor said the nurses may not have cared as well for it :-)

i see so many people on the road with SERIOUS problems people. they dont have th etime or the care or too drunk or drugged - the infection, cough, fever, etc...gets worse and worse. i used to feel sorry and try to help but too many slagged me off -so i just laugh now.

if you are sick, you must stop or slow down and take care -even if it ruins your holiday, perpetual pub crawl, drug fest or chances of getting laid.

Last time I was India a friend arrived already sick from the plane. I took him to a little pharmacy in Hyderabad and they gave him a 5 days dose of antibiotics for about 2 dollars US. As for travel insurance, you will have to pay cash anyway and get reimbursed when you get back. I never bother, as medical treatment is very cheap in India and I'm not sure how you claim lost or stolen goods anyway. So, I never bother with it. Good karma always helps.
