Finding a doctor or Pharmacist ?

Hi Folks !

I'm a first timer to India, having had a week in Mumbai and have now been in Anjuna for 3 days .

I've been having some rather unpleasant bathroom moments for a few days now, nothing too urgent or explosive but I feel very lethargic and have some symptoms of a parasitic invasion.

I'm just wondering what is the best route to obtaining some medical advice in or around the local area ? Forgive my scepticism but I have a feeling that if I ask locally suddenly everyone and his mother will be a qualified GP !

I've located a chemist in Mapusa but am not sure if I should head for a doctor instead ?

Any advice would be much appreciated !!!

Hi. You might want to go ahead and talk to the pharmacist as a starting point-- they are generally pretty knowledgable, and see from there.

The doctors can also be fairly cheap (if cost is a factor). In Puri I got a fever and worried about malaria even though I was taking anti-malaria pills, using a net ,etc. I had no other symptoms. I went to local internet and looked up my symptoms and my medicines and decided to play it safe and visit a doctor. I asked staff and manager at my hotel for recommendations and they pointed me to nearby physician. He charged 100RS, said was likely just a cold (it was) and gave me some pills. I felt better later the same day. When I had start of hacking cough in Kolkata I used pharmacist and got cough syrup and antibiotics for about 60-70RS. Check it out, assure yourself that you won't die and you will feel better -- even if it turns out to be not much of anything. Well, that's my 10 paise. Good luck and good health.

When I had similar problems, a chemist healed me... I was in Pondycherry and also wondered what to do - for far to long. Then I went to one of the many Pharmacies and told the guy there my problem. What he do? He asked a couple of questions, nodded to my answers and gave me a powder and six pills that practically heald me. So my advice is, go to a chemist first(maybe one that is not to old...). Ah yes, he also said: No Masala...

Well I headed to Mapusa to some chemists but they all said I'd need to see a doc for any medications which were all closed as it was about 3pm so I gave up

Then it all got a bit wet and explosive so I stumbled to a rickshaw and just asked for a doctor. The driver took me right to the door and waited for me, bless him, he also paused on the way back for me to throw up about 5 pints of water/fanta/pepsi etc!

The doc was a very friendly young chap who took my temperature and blood pressure and prescribed some herbal syrup, whether or not it was that or my little internal armies that worked I don't know but today I passed a small brown solid and am so happy!! (Sorry to be graphic but I'm sure you know what I mean)

Its kinda scary to be feeling so ill so far from home for the first time, even though I have good insurance, things seem so haphazard here you feel you could just get forgotten.

Anyhow hopefully now things are on the up, thanks for the replies folks.
