ITFC my post wasn't in response to yours, merely subsequent. And by Beginners I didn't mean newbies, I meant new visitors to India. And my sense of humour is perfectly normal, Nick, it's everyone else who's strange.

I quite agree with you ITFC about preferring Odomos.
Not quite convinced by All Out and other plug-in thingies. Never seemed to work for me.

No problems Karuna.

I am pleased to have found this site, it is so very informative, especially with me looking at jobs in Kolkata.

What time(s) of the year am I going to suffer from Mossies in Kolkata? My chosen Anti Malrial drugs are Paludrine and Avlochlor, never had a problem in Goa or Kenya with them.

In my turn, I had not realised that you might have misunderstood Karuna's post as applying to you!

Misunderstandings all around .

Methinks you must, by now, be thinking, "Look, just tell me about the mosquitoes, please"!

I have heard from people "up North" that the mosquitoes get much less in the colder months, but are never entirely absent. I used to think that there would not be many in Chennai's December, but this year we had about 2-3 days when I didn't notice any.

Hope one of our Kolkata people will be along soon with a real answer!

mosquitos in kolkata - all year round, maximum in monsoon, less in winter.

A ceiling fan and a plug on like good knight will usually be enough to ensure a mossie free night.

Perhaps I shouldn't say this, but I was bitten every single night in Delhi unless I smeared myself with DEET and/or Odomos. Forehead, nose, armpit...once, having slathered Odomos on everywhere else, I got bitten somewhere unmentionable. I've said before, they love me.

Next time I'm bringing a net and more DEET and buying a job lot of Odomos and night coils and All Out. If you are the type that insects like, I really recommend taking serious precautions. There were never more than 2 or 3 mossies in the room at one time, but I ALWAYS got bitten if I didn't use the cream.

Ahhh, the joys of having sweet tasting blood

One thing I do when travelling is have a jar of Marmite with me, now dont go smearing this all over yourselves as it will make a lot of mess
Spread nicely on crispy toast it is said to have vitamin B1? in it which repels Mossies? I have had a few bites in my travels, but no where near as many as I did before eating Marmite?
I have also started to drink Vodka and Tonic whilst away so the quinine may also have an effect?
Strange as it seems the Marmite really does appear to have been a masterstroke and I never leave home without it now and the first thing I always do when arriving at my Holiday home or workplace is buy packs and packs of Odomos and several Good Knight mats.
Thanks everyone

I've tried marmite... I've tried B1 supplements... I've tried homeopathic stuff both to repel and treat --- none of it works for me.

But, hey, you've made me hungry: I'm off to the kitchen for toast and marmite

Karuna, can you get the Odomos stuff in the UK? I searched but couldn't find any.

A net is a good idea then?

I've never seen Odomos in the UK, I suppose we just have no need of it. It's readily available in India from chemists though and general stores too, esp. in tourist areas.

I will be bringing my net next time, but then as I said, I am a mosquito magnet. I was also staying in a place with grills above the doors, made perfectly for mossies to fly in and out. Grrr.

What you can get in the UK is the lifesystems range natural mossie repellant. It is a citronella based spray (i.e. no ddt) and i have been using it for years and never get bitten when i use it (provided i cover myself properly)

It makes me wonder why people insist on using ddt-based products but then maybe it doesnt work for everyone?

I'm a daily marmite or vegemite person - and it does seem to work for me too. On the other hand, this year has been so dry, now it's cold, there's hardly a mozzie around out this way. When it's warmer and puddles are about, the fan at night and those plug in Good Knight type of machines seem to do the trick for us. Also screens on the windows.
