epidemic
maybe i'm just being paranoid, but is it really safe to travel to india now (as i'm planning to do) when experts warn that the epidemic of malaria and cholera might soon break out in the areas hit by tsunamis. i mean, if the epidemic breaks out in the south, can it easily spread even to the north ?
just wondering.... |

Not an issue. Just stay away from the problem areas for a million reasons--only one of which would be the increased risk of disease.

Sagar - I too am similarly concerned with the warnings from health experts, but hope that the many shots I have just had, will keep me protected to some exent. Of equal concern is the way I feel about having to excuse and explain my reasoning for going ahead with my trip (3 years in the planning) to a country very affected by the current crisis. Having the memory of the Bali disaster (not 1st hand - but we all seemed to know someone directly involved), and experiencing questioning about returning there 6 months after the event, I can not help but wonder how others are feeling about their impending trips to India. My plans have always been mainly for travel in the West / North, but I imagine at this time the whole country is in deep shock, and affected in many ways and areas. I can not imagine pulling out this close (I leave in 3 weeks) - I guess I am worried about how tourists will be recieved at this time. Your thoughts?

Get your jabs and keep away from affected areas as advised.

Seeing as you are traveling in the west & north, away from areas hit by tsunamis, I would expect that tourists will be very welcome! Tourist areas & tourist businesses always suffer after a disaster because people are afraid to go there. Seems to me that this is a good time to be a tourist, good for the Indian economy & good for you, you might find people even more welcoming than they already are. Explain to people that it would be adding insult to injury if all the tourists cancelled their trips to areas of India unaffected by tsunamis. The last thing all the Rajastan/Delhi tourist business people need is a bunch of cancellations because Southern India had a disaster. That would just add more hardship to an already suffering country. |
