Electrolytes in India?
A quick question: does anybody know of a good source of electrolytes in India? Back home we have Emergen-C powder, Gatorade and other sports drinks, etc.
I am doing a lot of sweating here in Kolkata, so I'm sure I could use some. Also another tourist at the guest house is sick and losing a lot of fluids that way and I thought if I knew of something I could suggest it to her or share some. Any ideas? |

I see the Indian cricket team drinking a orange drink which I am sure is like Gatorade or Lucozade. It's made by either Coke or Pepsi (like everything.

there is something called ELECTRAL that doctors prescribe. Its the largest selling oral rehydration salt in India. its available over the counter in all medicine shops. It comes in a white and green sache. I have used it myself lot of times.
http://www.fdcindia.com/products.htm By the way..... electral is usually not used unless you are sick. For sweating etc you can drink natural drinks like coconut water, nimbu pani or maybe glucose water but not ELECTRAL. |

Thought you were talking about batteries when I saw the thread title: Robotvoice needs his cells topping up!
Should be available from pharmacies in India, although they might put a little too much sugar in the mix. For normal stuff (ie not having a serious case of the runs) I would recommend drinking fruit juices, and adding a little (not enough to taste) salt to your drinking water. Mrs N makes a delicious drink by squezing a fresh lime and adding some salt and sugar into a litre of water.

yes, the salted drinks are helpful, as long as you dont taste it. i remember one time ordering a lassi without specifying sweet or salty, so they assumed salty. they must have put two or three tablespoons of salt in it.Yuck! i have been drinking a lot of juice and getting plenty of salt in my food, i think. |

Nimbu pani but the powder is available anywhere. Just don't take it dry! I did once for peculiar reasons and it was like eating sand..

You just need a lemon, pinch of salt and some sugar..and water of course..infact this is what helps us survive the heat wave of Delhi.. |

I think you're talking about what are commonly referred to as ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts/Solutions), RV. Should be easily available over the counter at any drugstore; the household recipe is 8:1 teaspoons of sugar and salt in 1 liter of water, but the commercial stuff presumably has some minerals added.
