I have to say that I drew my conclusion about ice-cold drinks and kidney damage from observations and advice in "experience related medicine" (German: Erfahrungsmedizin), and from one case where I observed that regular intake of (ice-) cold drink led to kidney failure. Diagnosis of the case related the two clearly. It is generally known and observed that drinking ice-cold fluids affects the renourinary tract. Kidney stone formation is seen related to cold drinks, and so is urinary inflammation, and prostate problems.

poor digestion (fermentation) puts a load on the kidneys. People that know about medicine and how the body works all agree, cold beverages are bad for you. This was discovered over 1000 of years of observation. Name one aryurvedic doctor in all of India that tells anyone to drink cold liquids. Exactly what it does and how it does it, I do not know, but I do know ice is not nice.

Eating ice is supposed to be very bad for the teeth. I would consult a dentist and he will probably say the same. My daughter who's only 15 has a problem with her teeth because she also likes to eat ice. The dentist told her that her teeth are becoming brittle because of it.
Think about it. Alll that coldness on your teeth has to have a negative effect on them. It's obvious to me that that would make you teeth prone to cracking. |

But since ice works wonders for you over there, maybe you should flip and try eating fire every week in India, Bijapuri can probably help. Chilli peppers would work too. |

A key health benefit of eating ice is that it helps you burn calories and maintain good weight It takes 1 calorie to raise the temperature of water by 1 degree. And, you can imagine how many calories you might be crunching through! Particularly important in McD's. May be not enough Calories (made up of 1000 calories) through , but every little bit helps ![]() |

While we're on this subject, I have a question:
I've heard a lot of Indians, in India and elsewhere, claim that cold drinks are bad for you, and that ideally you should drink most liquids at room temp (or hot, in the case of chai, I guess!). Is this an ayurvedic thing? Where does this originate? What do Indians believe about it -- the thing about it messing with your digestive and/or adrenal system? I've heard a lot of strange western beliefs about food, but that's not one of them. So when I started hearing Indian friends tell me they never took ice in their drinks, drank chilled water, etc. I started to wonder. |

No idea Opo; it could be like with showering: Hot showers suit a hot climate well, cold showers a cold one. I suspect it's no coincidence that hot drinks like tea and coffee are popular in some of the world's hotter regions.
I guess many Indian health systems also stress avoiding any great stimulants, so drinking your beverages at room temperature would seem to fit into that. Finally, a popular belief may have grown from times when there was no ice, or when this was perceived as foreign on its introduction.
