Eating icecubes; a hobby, recreation and good for my teeth.
Ok Folks,
Here's a random one, I like to eat icecube on a weekly basis, now when I come to India I was wondering if you can get safe ice to eat. Normally i use McDonald's for my weekly ice fix, which i'm sure most cities will cater to my needs. so here's my questions: What is the frequency on McD's throughout India? In the more remote places: Do budget hotels have bars? Can you buy ice in the shops? - Is it cheap? (like everywhere else) on a final note: Anyone have any experience or knowledge about the beneficial side to eating icecubes? (I learnt it off a couple of severly Autistic people) - All i can say is my teeth have been the best they have in years since i started, I'm an Englishman with the teeth to match... Is it all psychosomatic? Another crack pot heading for India? well..... Maybe Let me know. |

If you see the conditions its made and transported in in India you may choose to defer ice. Its also one of my dentist's chief rants as to why people think they can abuse their teeth (the damage shows up later)..

The ice available in India is only fit to be fed to Norwegian ferrets.
Avoid it!

Another pointer, health-related: Kidney-failure (in the long run) is caused among others by cold drinks, let alone eating ice.
BTW kidney failure, mostly untreatable due to high costs, is rather common in India due to their crazy salt-intake, plus as a side-issue of diabetes, (India: the diabetes capital of the world, no need to say why ). |

I don't know about psychosomatic, but someone I know completely lost their hearing ability by crunching on ice cubes from McD's and elsewhere, here in the US.
Eating ice in India, which has not been approved by the FDA may have some unkown side effects which we know of and are detailed above and below. |

I have to say that I find Atala's theory that kydney failure is caused by cold drinks almost as weird as cpfreeatlast's theory that surely McD's is safe!

alta is notmaking this up
The mantra that must be chanted before eating ice is "ice is not nice" It must be chanted loadly. Ice kills 5% of the intestinal micro floral each time it is consumed. The Mcd's in India are much the same as at home, dumb teen agers not understanding what you want and screwing up your order.

As to the 5% of my intestinal flaura I destroy, i'm sure it rejuvenates itself in the 7 days I have my next ice eating session. A healthy cycle my body will no doubt adjust to. I have many idiosyncratic methods for maintaining my health, i'm my own piece of medical research, come and ask me about my health in a decade and we'll see. |

Is not very credible in my humble opinion. Is there any study out there to indicate this??

The craving for eating ice is considered a Pica - a type of eating disorder that is an indicator of a dietary deficiency. Eating ice is often the sign of having iron deficiency anemia. Maybe eating it only once a week isn't an indication of a problem, but possibly you should have your iron levels checked. There's a disussion of the issue in these two articles:
http://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2004/11/...ot-of-ice.html http://www.dietitian.com/iron.html Also, my dentist told me that crunching on ice can crack your teeth. |

Even if a cube of ice reaches the stomach intact (unmelted), it is stopped from going further to the duodenum by the pyloric sphincter. It will melt into water in less then five mins. The pyloric sphincter will not open before that. Hence what will go ahead is water at body temperature. If some-one wanted to introduce an ice cube into the ileum via the posterior (anal) opening, I am afraid, another sphicter named the ileocaecal sphicter will play spoilsport. It will not open at all. By the time it takes for a surgical laparoscopic probe to open this sphicter, the ice will have melted again. The only way IN is to introduce a sufficiently large block of ice so that some remainder can survive the melt on the way. Say around eight cubic inches to start with. Not only will the flora be destroyed, even the host will be destroyed. Serves the fellow right for not allowing the ice to pass thru the sphincters. And making it melt. Castrate all such people, I say... with a cryogenic laser knife !!! . . . |
