Eating Fish

A very personal question.

My son (3 years) likes fish very much (Sea fish). He eats at least 300-400 Grams fish everyday. I want to know that is it harmful for his health? Would this create problem in future?

Any help would be appreciated.

Fish is food for the brain, especially. Very healthy. Not harmful.

I agree. While I don't know about dosages etc. (speak to your physician?) I don't think it should be a problem as such. Fish has a lot of unsaturaded fatty acids which is said to be good for you, more so than meat for instance. And it's said to stimulate the brain indeed, even to counter depression and other such afflictions.

Maybe check where you buy your fish and esp. where it's caught, they easily absorb various pollutants such as mercury and whatnot I believe.

But in general don't worry too much about it I'd say, see to a varied diet in general of course, fruits and veggies and the whole shebang (pulses, grains etc.). Sanjay will have more to say on this no doubt.

... Consulting with mrs. M. just now , we're not sure, maybe my mention of "unsaturated fatty acids" isn't quite correct. She (a strict vegetarian) tells me fish generally comes in fat and not-so fat varieties, both of which are good for you for different reasons. However different rules may apply to kids, so consult your doctor or similar indeed.

Other seafood (shellfish etc.) may pose problems indeed she thinks, so again ask a professional. All that stuff being fresh is of the essence of course, as you'll know.

Cheers Mahmud.

... After some more discussion we're guessing now fish poses a potential threat in terms of various bacterial infections and the likes, which a healthy adult will likely survive but an infant may not. Again, freshness is absolutely crucial here.

We have fish farms in Canada now, so the question is not as easily answered these days as it was once upon a time. The Farm fish have dye/colorants added to the food to get the flesh hue "right" for market. They also use drugs/antibiotics in the food to maximize their yield.

My advice is to do a little research and buy the best & deepest sea fish you can find - to minimize the absorption of man-made chemicals and pollutants.

Are shellfish safe to eat? We worry when we see so much pollution in the water here.

Fish is definitely good for you, but be careful that he is not getting too much of a good thing. A recent large US government-funded study showed that the benefits of eating fish outweigh the dangers if you eat no more than 12 ounces a week (as an adult). In Bangladesh mercury is certainly a concern since, for all intents and purposes, there is little environmental enforcement and wastewater regularly enters the water supply. In children it does not take much mercury or lead to cause developmental problems.

Remember also that toxins bioaccumulate and this it is always wise to eat lower on the food chain (i.e. herbivores over carnivores) and to avoid bottom-feeders if at all possible (these species eat detritus). Prefer ocean fish over river fish (rivers tend to be more polluted). Prawn in South Asia increasingly comes from ponds and is often suspect because of the large amounts of pesticides and anti-biotics that are used. Avoid shellfish because they filter (dirty) water, collect heavy metals and can cause Hepatitis.

Sorry, I did not mean to ruin your "Ilis in mustard sauce", but I think that too much fish can, in fact, be dangerous. (BTW, Ilis is anadromous - it spends most of its life at sea, but spawns in rivers.)

Thumbs up

consult your physician or a dietician for this.

Otherwise, fish is very healthy.

i take them everyday (aruound 40-50 gram), on Sundays even 200-300 grams.

Typically, small fishes and sea fishes are better than the larger ones. which may contain more fat. they are good for the brain and have other health benefits also.

your son has a good habit, at least better than having a crush on meat.
