Dvt

word of warning.. i developed DVT (actually not DVT, the clog was in a feeder vein so it's not Deep VT).

if you get a sore leg or arm, particularly after a long flight or indian train trip, see your doctor!

i reckon the culprit was the hard bunk on the jodhpur-delhi train.

DVT is caused by blocking a vein, i.e. by compressing it with your other leg or something over a period of time.

i don't know what caused it other than clues from the timing and the uncomfortableness of the bed making my leg 'go to sleep'.

i'm also 6'3 and almost *nothing* in india accommodates my height, everything's made for 5'8 people, which didn't help me.

I have a mild condition called "restless leg syndrome" which I don't consider a condition at all .... but a natural defense mechanisn against dvt/circulation type conditions.

There is a technique for the arms that works particularly well for maximum circulation while sleeping on your side. The underarm lays unobstructed beside your bed/bottom side while the top arm projects outward and (over an extra pillow preferably) over in a comfortable arch.

Glad to hear it didn't get worse julesa!

DVT is caused by not moving for long periods of time, like on a flight overseas. That's why it's so important to walk around every hour on a plane. DVT is what killed a well-known reporter in Iraq. He was in a cramped tank for hours, not being able to stretch his legs.

yeah i'm pretty good on flights because that's where all the publicity is given but i suspect i developed it sleeping on the 'wooden' mattresses of indian sleeper trains.

that's a guess though, although i know i already had symptoms when i boarded the flight back home.

On my first trip, coming back from Chennai to Germany, I fell asleep for about 4 hours. When I woke up my left ankle was so swollen I could not see or feel the ankle bone at all. scary.

On a long haul flight get up often & take a stroll. While seated move your feet occasionally. Drink a lot of non alcoholic fluids.

I wear flightsocks for any journeys of more than 3 hours. They stop those puffy ankles too.
