Dukoral

This may be a case like that of the dog didn't bark: my stomach gave me no trouble during over three weeks in India.

Ten days before leaving the US I took the recommended dose of Dukoral, following up three days before departure with the second dose.

I experienced no 'Delhi belly.' My stool was soft much of the time and I had diarrhoea on two days. I've experienced worse inconveniences in Brazil and Egypt.

Dukoral, available from pharmacies in Canada, may be the reason I escaped significant intestinal disorders (and cholera, against which the drug is said to provide immunity).

This despite the fact I was not especially fastidious: I drank coffee and soft drinks from questionable roadside stands, ate salads in hotel and other restaurants, and brushed my teeth a few times with tap water.

At about US$90 for the two-dose treatment, Dukoral is not cheap. It may or may not have protected me. But the dog did not bark -- and that is reason enough to think the dollars were well spent.

Despite your lack of symptoms, I hope you'll have a parasite test done now that you are back home; you wouldn't necessarily know that you haven't acquired some parasite at this time.

So ... why would coffee make the dog bark ?

Interesting to hear from someone who have actually used it.
I read some of the documentation on Dukoral a while ago, there was a study on resident population in ...Morocco , methinks, with a definite, but long way from total effect.
Eating sallads I`ll still consider as an auto destruct mechanism.

So the only way to get this stuff in the states is to order it from Canada?

You can get it in your city but it will cost you quite a bit.

Ummm... no. Its not approved here, right? There's hardly a hot Dukoral black market. Crack or smack I can get down the street inside of two minutes. No problem. Dukoral? I can hear it now... "What the hell is dukoral? Smoke these rocks, biatch!"

Its about $90 shipped from the first pharmacy hit on froogle. Anyone know of a site that can beat that price?

I ordered it from abconlinepharmacy.com out of Vancouver for $179 for two persons. We have taken one dose (no side effects) and take the second one tomorrow. My daughter who is a microbiology professor at Texas A&M College Station looked at the info on it and said she thought we should take it. A medical doctor friend (gastroenterologist) who travels to SE Asia regularly highly recommended it.

It says that resistance lasts about three months... and that you can take a single booster if you've had previous doses to get more resistance. So... three doses for 6 months, I guess?

Right ... but you can`t bring it with you : should be stored in a fridge. The Swedish official pharmaceutical handbook says it has a documented 60 % efficacy against E. coli , about the same against cholera among adults (this was the original target).
The price here in Sweden is around 35 Euros for the prescribed two doses (damn those communists !) .

Dukoral may be hard to get for a while : SBL (the sole manufacturer) has delivered its complete stock and is in the process of delivering a total of 400 000 doses to Sri Lanka , India (and Indonesia, I presume) to combat cholera.

Exactly. It's not a magic medicine. There are so many other bacteria from which you can get sick.

I took Dukoral the first time and went to India, and I got sick many times, while on this trip I did'n take it, and I still haven't been sick (knock no wood ) after nearly five months. Of course the first time might have been even worse if I didn't take it, but you never know.

There are no medicines that can protect you from a bad stomach in India. Some can help a little, and common sense can help a lot.
