drugs, man.......

Okay, so I'm not planning on taking malarials as usual. In the past, I've gone to the travel clinic and while getting boosted up on vaccinations, I've also gotten an Rx for if you happen to get malaria; it's a two-day mega horse of a pill but I forget what it's called. You take it and it gets you by until you can get to a doctor. Anyone? And can you get this in India? I'm all good for my vaccinations (still good from last time except Hep B which they told me unless I'm a healthcare worker don't bother -or if I plan to have unsafe sex, which I'm not on either) so if I want this Rx here I'd have to pay the 60 buck consultation fee on top of what the 2 pills cost. Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks!

It's called mefloquine (larium) but it's only useful as an emergency treatment for falciparum malaria, the one that will kill you if left untreated. Personally I came down with vivax malaria and unfortunately the mefloquine wouldn't have helped anyway. If you still want it, I would recommend buying it in India as it will be ridulously cheap (likely, less than 50 cents + an Indian head wiggle).

I haven't taken any anti-malaria drugs and most of the travellers l've come across have either not taken any or have had side effects. I have been here for like 8 wks maybe now and l haven't even seen a mosquito yet! Although l am sticking to the north so it maybe different in the south.

It's too cold for mosquitos in most of northern India right now, but wait another month or so and you will see plenty of them.

I had a friend die of malaria because he wouldn't /didn't take the pills, so in Ralph's memory, I don't travel in India without taking them.

Make sure to avoid any activities where you might be exchanging bodily fluids. (Like barber shop shaves, ear cleaning, getting cuts or abrasions requiring treatment, etc.)
