If you are caught you will most likely go to prison,,,,,,,,

There is nothing the cops like better than to bust some foreigners,
If it's an illegal bust they'll screw you for as much cash as they can, and you might still end up in Jail, If it's a legal bust, you wont see the outside world for a long time,,,,,,,
It makes it look like the police are doing a good job and it looks good for the work record /statistics to round up foreigners every so often.

c'mon Raven, even Indian guys can be given a very bad beating up by the cops,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

They're pretty much available all over these days, especially around foreigner haunts. And it's not such a big deal these days either. Sentences are more like 6 months for possession of personal use quanities. It's only when you're transporting large quantities of drugs across borders that you get to enjoy 5 years undertrial time + 10 years RI. Your best bet: Befriend some Israelis & smoke away..

hmm...I was wondering...are foreigners more targeted by cops? would they be more likely to let Indians go with a fine or nothing?

I'm reminded of a famous quote from Willy Sutton, an infamous American bank robber. When asked why he robbed banks, he replied 'because that's where the money is'

I think Indian cops use a similar rationale in targeting foreign rather than domestic drug users.

During the '80s I smoked enough reefer to build a bridge to India (I played in reggae bands - it was required :-) so maybe I'm not the one to be giving advice, but I say just say no to ganja in India.
The first word spoken to me by anyone in India as I stepped out of the airport terminal was "smoke?" And he wasn't offering me a bidi...
In Khajuraho a guy offerred to score some hash for us and I just knew he'd also be collecting his "reward" from the police later for his info...
And for the record, I quit in 1990 because of the bad karma connected with the pot trade (organized crime, hard drugs, guns etc.) I understand that terrorist organizations have now also become involved - something to consider. -Greg

If you never been to India before, you'll have a hard time knowing in advance what a spectacle you are as a white person. There is absolutely no way you can blend in, and no way to minimize the sideshow that you become.

If you are dressed shabbily and hanging around Goa, you will have a hard time convincing people that you are not interested in buying drugs. In big cities, you attract less notice. In small towns, especially the former hippie hangouts, the cops and dealers will take note of you. They know where you stay (everyone stays in the same places) and what you'll be doing (everyone does essentially the same thing, drugs or no drugs). You're just too obvious--and therefore at a severe disadvantage if you are trying to do something covert.

Also, trying to toke up in Goa is a 30-year-old cliche, and if the cops feel like busting you that day, there's really nothing to stop them. And all your Western notions about civil liberties and due process will come under severe strain.

No, it's just that they've taken care of the cops in places they frequent (towns in HP/UL, Goa etc), and most come to India for this specific reason: to get high, relax and forget situation at home after their compulsory military service. So if you're looking for some, and you're not Indian-looking, they would be your most promising and cop-safe suppliers.

Goa emerging as drug trafficking route
----------------------------------------------
by B D Narayankar

Drug traffickers seem to have taken the route of Goa for smuggling drugs
to Israel, Holland and France, after a flurry of seizures made by the
Anti-Narcotics Bureau of the state police in the recent past, according
to informed sources.

A probe into the cases of drug seizures in the last eight months also
revealed that drug traffickers were lifting drugs in smaller quantities,
so as to avoid losing bigger quantities, if they were recovered by the police.

Speaking to The Navhind Times here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police,
Mr R S Krishnaiah said in most cases, drug traffickers do not divulge
information regarding smuggling of drugs. "In this backdrop, it is difficult
for the police to trace the routes," he said. However, police suspect the
drugs are being lifted from Goa to Israel, Holland and France.

It is also learnt that the drugs were being lifted to Sri Lanka via Kerala.
The operators get drugs from Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Kashmir.
"Mostly drugs come into Goa by train or road. Recently some of the
consignments came via Mumbai and Andhra Pradesh from various
parts of northern India," Mr Krishnaiah said.

But there are no fixed means of smuggling drugs. "If the police turn
vigilant in identified routes, drug traffickers change their routes. Hence
it becomes a herculean task for the police to check the menace,"
Mr Krishnaiah said, adding that a large quantity of drugs have been
seized from Goa's coastal belt.

Moreover, the foreigners hardly cooperate with the police, instead they
contend that the contrabands were handed over to them by other people,
Mr Krishnaiah said. Of the 17 people arrested till April 18 this year,
nine were foreigners, compared to 13 arrested last year, he informed.

Most of the time drug traffickers employ senior or elderly people in
smuggling the contraband. Usually they reside in cheaper houses at
Calangute, Mapusa or Porvorim. "If a drug trafficker stays at Calangute,
he stores drugs at a house at Mapusa or any other place. At a time
he establishes more than ten contacts to carry out his operations,"

Anti Narcotic Cell sub-inspector, Mr Roy Pereira said. "Sometimes
we have unearthed drugs from mud," he added. So far the police have
seized contraband worth Rs 42.68 lakh this year, compared to
Rs 30.76 lakh worth drugs seized last year, Mr Krishnaiah said.

That the stakes are big in transactions is evident from smugglers
purchasing drugs at Rs 2.50 lakh a kg in India, say police sources.
Further, with the seizure of huge quantities of drugs, meant to be
smuggled out of India through Goa, in the recent past, the authorities
here stepped up their vigil in the the State.

Sarcastic Yes but shrill I suppose I must be getting a bit old and grumpy still I still dont think this is the type of advice this forum should be handing out, experiences yes, advice yes but how to and where to buy something that could land someone in big I dont think so I guess there must be more of you lot that thinks its okay to pass this sort of info on than old grumps like me so I'll sign off from this thread gracefully and leave you lot to it
I didn't mean to imply that you were old and grumpy or belittle your concern for someone about to embark on something potentially risky or foolhardy without being aware of the consequences. Its just that I thought some of the responses were a bit too severe and disproportionate to the kind of doubts raised by the OP.Plus however well intentioned the advice against drug use of any kind might be, the way it was said it would have been hard to take in the proper spirit.

Quote:
I can't see anyone getting into trouble for discussing this stuff on a "public forum" the way it's handled. It's a perfectly legitimate if somewhat naive question and falls into the Indian fascination category, just like so many others asked here.
Exactly! It was never my intention to try and egg the OP on to try and do something illegal here in India, but merely to give as realistic a picture of the ground situation.

Quote:
And I'm sorry for seeming like a butt
...and i am sorry if i appeared overly critical of your statements. Its just that i thought the OP deserved a fair reply at the very least.

If you read Goa Freaks (although it is a bit dated) it describes in detail how foreign tourists supported their drug habits by becoming carriers for the drugs. All the more reason for foreign tourists to come to terms with why they might be targeted by the police.

Just because drugs are available and freely used in India, does not mean that it is ok. Yes, the govt officials want to go after the traffickers mainly because of international pressure. As Steve's article suggests, the traffickers routes their stuff through India. Goa became a hub during the hippee years due to its abundance of young foreign tourists and their willingness to become part of the operation.

When the Indian govt has to show "results", they may be forced to make arrests. Claims that drugs have been planted by the cops have also surfaced. The police have created a "Narcotics Cell" in Goa to focus on this problem.

All the above posts should serve as a warning to anyone choosing to do drugs in India. Don't say you weren't warned.
