Drinking Water

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me how safe the water is in India - or more specific, Goa and South India?

I have heard so many stories!. Some say not to drink the water, or make sure it's boiled properly etc. I brought some purification droplets (Iodene) and others have said that these drops don't necessarily work! Others have also said that even the bottled water isn't safe to drink.

While people say to make sure the water has been boiled, there is still no way of really telling that the water has really been boiled.

I drank boiled water and bottled water in Egypt and still managed to get the bug. ( I think that was due to contaminated bottled water)

Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you kindly........

My first time in India, leaving on 27th!........ I can't wait!

freebirdnz - Great quote on your bio-page! I have a t-shirt with that on it.
My personal quote/mantra is "Buy the ticket, take the ride." I've never been sick in India. Ever. Five trips. Almost two years. Never sick. Ever. Tea, chai, coffee has in my experience always been made with boiled water. I drink bottled water. Have never used drops of any kind. So many horror stories out there - some true. Wish I had some to share with you , but I don't. And besides water, there are so many other ways "to get the bug." Water's an easy target, sometimes the culprit, have you ever looked into an Indian kitchen? Don't! I'd go with this in mind: trust the hot water drinks, drink bottled water. Enjoy! You've "bought the ticket, take the ride!" Have fun! Peace. Namaste. Scott

If you type in 'drinking water' in the search box you will find a bunch of threads on this giving some various tips on what and where to avoid.

I drank bottled water, and for one instance questionable water from a pitcher in a Hare Krishna temple, purified water from a massage place, and chai everywhere (even by the river side of the Ganges in Varanassi). I didn't have any problems at all.

Just make sure the bottled water's seal isn't broken.

Thanks again :-)

The water might be a bit salty if yu got to the coastal regions ..so local water will anyway not be good....
WARNING : do not use too much of iodien tablets ..health risk
bottled water is safe as long as the seal is not broken...
check with the seal of cap not the plastic cover cuz that could be used as a deception... in big towns bottled water is never an issue as far as safety is concerned ..
don't be paranoid about health ..yu will survive :-)
post other queries if yu need help...beware of guides ..
have a nice trip
cheers
