The fifteen rupee beach shack solution

*Fill a PET bottle with water in the morning
*Place it on a tin roof
*drink it in the afternoon , after cooling.

I know it sounds like a joke , but apparently SODIS is a well documented solution , using
bits and pieces of what has been mentioned here before : ultraviolet from the sun instead of batteries , and heat under long time instead of a momentary boil.

The project page mentions that you can use clear glass bottles as well (I imagine this will take longer) , which eliminates the taste issue.

Would be interesting to hear from someone who has tried it out.

I really like the idea of the larger 20 litre water bottles, but I guess it would be difficult storing these in a cool place (so that the water doesn't go bad)?
You can use earthern pot to keep the water cool. If you buy a big one, you can even store equivalent of 2/3 20 lt bottles. If you clean the pot properly before use, cover it properly and use a long handle container to pour out water, then I think it could be quite safe proposition.

Thats a very very SMASHING Idea...!!

you can purchase a Matka (Earthen pot with round mouth) OR Surai (Kettle like mouth)...they are kiln baked and traditionally considered very safe...

Also using the Matka, you can get well water in Goa that is much, much safer than any running water system. The Goans drink well water stored in exactly this kind of earthenware pot

You will not get running water supply 24 hours a day. A few hours a day and thats it. Sometimes not even that due to the acute water shortage in most parts of Goa.

Don't know whether it will be effective considering the high amount of fecal content in the water supply in many parts of India particularly urban areas.

these are perfectly safe, much preferrable from an environmental point of view than buying endless bottles of water, light/compact to bring with you and generally ok tasting - providing you avoid the iodine-based variety.

From all the research I did about drinking water, I am sorry I can't agree with you. I just know Micropur pills (silver-based), and that is only to keep the water fresh, not to kill bacterias or viruses. Chlorine based products can be used (I know them only in liquid form), but they are not 100% save for killing viruses.

Besides the possible chemical pollution boilt water is still a simple and safe solution. And chemicals you can remove only with a carbon filter.

In a beach shack I would go for fresh lime soda
