A bit off-topic
I'm much more interested in the curries and fantastic flavours of Indian cooking. Although we have not yet arrived (only 10 days to go) in addition to eating out, we have tried a number of dishes at home - tikki masala, bhindi (okra/'ladies fingers') masala, palak paneer - mmmmmm . Some I've made myself and some I've bought pre-packed, but I'm sure looking forward to wonderful flavoursome food.
You do realise that nothing you've made will taste even remotely like the food here.

I'm from the UK and thats got tens of thousand of 'authentic' Indian restaurants and not one dish I've consumed there tastes like it does here.

what else is dangerous

In 1984 I survived on chai in India during many days, because that was the onely drink you could get outside the big cities that you could somewhat trust. Don't think of it as normal tea though; Chai is in a totally differnet league.

Best recipe

Take a very old pan, put some some previously used low kwality tea in it, add condensed milk and too much sugar, let it come to the boil three times, serve in a small glass through a sieve.

Delicious

Hans

I'm looking forward to all the range of experiences that India will provide. And as with Africa, I'm fully aware that the reality can be very different from the expectation!! So I'm sure that I'll find numerous ways to drink chai and have a great time!!

Hey - don't forget about chai in clay cups too! It's not always in glass! I loved drinking chai from clay cups on the train. I even kept one of the cups as a souvenir and brought it home. Miraculously it survived the journey! :-)

I would throw that out if I was you. That clay cup might be contaminated with something....
Better safe than sorry.

Question

I have a supplementary question to this post:

Is life without tea safe? I have never tried living without tea and wonder whether it would actually be worth it ......

Ikuru, I was having a really bad day until I read your post here, thanks for cheering me up

Now, where's my chai

No Indeed you are right life without tea is like living in a world without music.
And probably not so safe for anyone.
Is life safe?
what makes us think that we are ever safe from anything?

And hey Im happy I could cheer up your day.
Life is like that. Ups and Downs, Sunsets and Chai.
And Like they say: Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly.

Off topic quote

An off topic extract from a poem by Ben Okri on whether life is safe:

"...Fear not, for death is not the real terror,
But life - magically - is"

.... and isn't it funny how, in times of crisis, we always offer tea along with our sympathy to make people feel better - or is that just a British thing? (the tea that we stole from India, come to think of it ..... or was it China)

Now looking at this site for the answer: http://www.tea.co.uk/tGloriousT/

Hey, nice quote. Yeah tea is a calm... So your english then?
Heres a nice quote on fear and death and ehm tea... or..

"You love fear. The ending of fear is death, and you don't want that to happen. I am not talking of wiping out the phobias of the body. They are necessary for survival. The death of fear is the only death."

A bit off topic maybe but maybe not....
